Many times I've said Bruges is an ace place coz it is, now I add Gent. Similar but bigger with some Serious churches.

Camping Blaarmeersen is the place to stay. Showers to die for.

Gent in Dutch and German.

Gand in French

Gante in Austrian and Spanish

Ghent in English

therefore, as this is a UK web forum for mainly UK residents it should be Ghent.

Does this mean your new name is Fatherjohn as we cant say Pappa

Weather below spec on Mosel so legged it to Fussen. Rain non stop alll the way.

Fussen in the sun, a dream stop. The town is a delight. Wonderful cycling. And of course the number 1 castle in Europe which was heaving with folk paying 22E a head to get in.

Still snow on the mountains this far south.

From Fussen the magnetism of Italy grabbed hold, so now in Camping Cappuccino on Garda. Nicely improved with new bar/reception since our last visit. We'll enjoy this old friend for a few days. It's like coming home.

Then..........::bigsmile:

Hi Brian

We are due over there next month and tried to book three nights on ACSI site only to be told we can only book for a week. Have you had any similar experiences around Garda?

We're not booking but I think that is not uncommon.

Some decent days on Garda, the old magic is strong. Then a quick shift to Ankaran, Slovinja. At last hot sun. But soggy pitches, it's the first time it's stopped raining for ages. Never been here before, so far friendly people and good beer. More later.

Slovijna marked Must Return, when weather good. They've been under water for weeks. Weather turning bad again, so......

Hello Riccione. Best weather prospects. Pitch is rock hard. There's a novelty. Not been here for years, we'll see if it matches fond memories.

Riccioni. I guess the Italian equivalent on Benidorm. At the end of the motoway from the industrial power house of Italy, everything you need to relax from beaches lined with loungers and shades to designer shops for that little number to be seen in at night. They didn't have anything in my size and colour fortunately.

Some good days in hot sun and a bit of rain. Watched the Italians having great fun on a track day at the local race track, some really serious bikes going round. One toy was the latest Panigale top spec model, new, €25K just to run round for fun. They were not pottering around, that's for sure.

Then weather improves to the north so back on track to see Germany.

From Riccioni we needed a stop near Austria, so found an ACSI site near Trento. On Lake Caldonazzo. A dream location. Surrounded by high mountains it was gloriously peaceful. The family running ( owning ?? ) Spiaggia were the most friendly people we met all holiday. Some excellent restaurants along the shore road and not over priced.

From Trento, sneak into Austria by it's back passage, no vignette, and make it to Garmisch Partenkirchen. Oh boy. Talk about money. If you want to know where the very rich Germans live, it's Patenkirchen.

And why not. Overlooked by Germany's highest peak. Glorious location does not do it justice.

We have our best storm here. Typical mountain storm. Wall to wall lightning. Rain like golf-balls and all over in a couple of hours.

Good if you like going up mountains but at €50 a ticket we baulked at going up the Zugspitz.

After Garmisch, Heidelburg. Great ACSI campsite in Neckargemund. Only 3 weeks earlier the campsite was in the river or a meter under the river. The river busses took us to see Germany's number one attraction, Heidelburg Castle.

What a bargain, €6 buys a cable train ticket up to the castle and entry into the castle. As castles go, on big beast. Hugh gardens. It must have been quite something in it's heyday. Even now, pretty knocked about it's and awesome sight. Great town too. No wonder it's No. 1.

From Heidelburg to Rudesheim. Another campsite that was under a metre of water a few weeks ago. Very good campsite on the Rhein. But Rudesheim, there's about 200 metres of tourist trap and that's it. It has moorings for at least 6 massive hotel boats at a time so they do very well out of that 200 metres.

Next stop, on the Mosel at Cochem. Now this is a Grade 1 tourist trap. Loads of cute old building and a cute old Castle above. Even better, a stellplatz for a few Euros within walking distance of the town.

Did not buy wine in Cochem, I thought it was too touristy so probably not good deals.

We wandered along the Mosel and stopped at a couple of Weingud establishments and bought wine where it is processed and bottled. €5 or so for wine they'd charge you £30/£40 a bottle for in a restaurant.

And from the Mosel, it's an easy hop to the ferry at Dunkirque.

Job done.

Far from as planned but the weather always wins.
