As you can see I live in France we watch tv with a Sky box we are considering buying a Humax Free Sat box with recording facility.

Ok here comes the question from a numpty can you download the recordings from the box so we can take and watch in the van when away ??

Sky boxes do not allow you to watch programmes (for long) without a satellite signal. I guess this is so you don't record 350 hours of Sky's programming and sell the box to a mate.

I don't have a Humax box in front of me but I'm certain that this will allow you to record programmes to the box and allow you to take the box away to watch at your leisure.

But I don't know if you can copy programmes on the Humax to a memory stick. I suspect you may be better looking on a more specialist forum.

Perhaps I did not make myself clear but we have a dish at home and on the van . In the past we have also taken a video recorder and watched stuff we have recorded at home when we are somewhere without a tv signal and the weather is rubbish.

We wonder if it possible to do something like this from a humax box

You can buy separate devices to record to external hard drives which you could take away with you. Not sure how you would integrate that into the sky setup but they sell them on Amazon.

I was looking for one for my mum so she could watch programs I had saved on my hard disk from dvd. They are not expensive either somewhere around the £40 mark.

I will look them up this evening for you and post links.

Pick up sat tv
Pick up wifi including a booster
Pick up digital tv
Pick up radio
Pick up G3 -G4 internet
All we will have inside will be a row of sockets to plug in what we need
No need for seperate wires/power supplies/boxes:thumb:

Have a look here regards the humax. http://hummy.tv/forum/ the custom software is great , I use it and it also allows me to set the recorder when away from home, there are threads about recordings and I think the HD recordings you are not able to watch else where

I don't have a Humax box so you need to check it can record/copy on to DVDs, I expect it can. We have a Panasonic box with BluRay recorder, the FreeSat signal allows us to copy HD programs on to BluRay once only, but allows unlimited copying of SD programs to DVDs.

All recording is to the internal hard disc, copying to DVD can then be done at anytime later.

I have a Humax box as well as the Sky+ box and linked both to a Panasonic hard disk recorder to copy stuff before editing and putting onto DVD's.

I've just uncoupled the 2 sat cables from the Humax and obviously it tells me there's no signal but I'm playing a recording of Manchester United's umpteenth victory parade and I'll leave recordings running all day if necessary to test if it continues to work, unlike Sky where it's quite correct, you need the connection. Will keep you posted.

Hi,isn't this stuff complicated?You need a degree or grand kids to work it all out.
I live in France also and at the weekend a friend who is a TV and Satellite installer fitted my new to me Sandstrom box,which he advised me is a poor mans Humax!
During the day he mentioned to me it would be ideal for taking away in the van and watching what has been recorded without any additional equipment.
I know you asked about Humax but he did say the systems are similar,hop this helps.:thumb:

I use a fortec star freesat box with usb connection and use an external hard drive to record programmes,this enables me to watch the recorded programmes using the freesat box without satellite connection.

Unfortunately this seems to be the only way to watch the programmes as if I try to view the recordings via computer,or burn to DVD, I get a message telling me I do not have the correct 'codecs' and have tried several times to download the correct ones without success.

TV programmes take around 2Gb of memory per hours recording so a large hard drive is needed if you intend to record lots of programmes.

Hi , I was advised by my local store yes you can record onto the humax and take it away to replay in the camper, one word of caution he said was, as it is hard drive too much vibration or knocks if not store in camper and cushioned could damage the hard drive, so we haven't taken ours away yet.

I have looked at Broken Link Removed again I was going to buy and it won't do what you need. It is a freeview PVR so would be incompatible with linking to a sky box I think. It accepts external hard drives so I am going to plug my external drive in preloaded with programs for my mum to watch.

However there are loads of other devices quite a few of which would allow you to record from your scart out socket onto a USB hard disk. You could then take the USB hard disk in the van with you and watch on a laptop using VLC..

I did the search on SCART not HDMI as HDMI can enforce copy protection SCART can't. However SCART can't do HD. This is a price I am prepared to pay for no DRM though.

If you do a search on amazon for SCART to USB.... You have to skip the obviously wrong results but there are many many pages of devices such as Broken Link Removed But I don't have time right now to sift through and find the one I think would do the job for you sorry.

I have now downloaded VLC media player but it will not play the TV programmes recorded to my hard drive, the files are Ali/ Dvr whatever that means. Has VLC not downloaded properly?, it will play the other video files on my computer, or is there something else I need. The operating system is Vista.
Any help would be much appreciated.

It depends on what format your PVR records to. I would be looking for one that records in mpeg 4.

It depends on what format your PVR records to. I would be looking for one that records in mpeg 4.

All I can find out is that the file is a DVR file, if I try to play in Windows Media Player it tells me that the file extension is DVr.

I recorded the programmes direct onto the hard drive via the usb socket on the freesat box.
