We have Dell laptops, and I have a 12v kit that allows me to power the laptop from teh 12v supply. Mrs ShiftZZ has an Inspiron m 301z and that ddoes not like the 12v supply...

Does anyone know of an alternative for the Inspiron?

Worth checking to see if the £19.99 Link Removed will work with the Dell you have?

Cheers

Double check that the 12V adaptor is powerful enough.
I've ahd the same problem as my Wife and I had different laptops with similar looking chargers. When mine wouldn't charge up I found it was because we'd somehow mixed up the adaptors and my Wife's wasn't powerful enough.
Some Dell laptops are much more power hungry than others - some require AC adaptors of 100W. If your 12V adaptor doesn't put out enough juice it won't charge.

My latitude needs a 90-100w adaptor, though runs fine from inverter, however noting post above, it needs a cheap 500w inverter as the 150w would not be up to the job. (power supply rated at 1.5A at 230v ie 345w)

JEEEZZZZZZZZZZZ !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How much current are those lappys drawing for goodness sake ?

Have a look at your battery

See what the Ah rating is..
Then fire it up on the battery and see how long it lasts.. Not VERY scientific but it will give a far better idea than just going by what is printed on a PSU that is proly used on countless different things and is over rated for a good many ..

a friend of mine bought a cheap charger from a chinese guy on Ebay. within weeks, the casing fell apart exposing bare wires because it got so hot and expanded/contracted in use. they asked me what was the best glue to repair it and were surprised when i said to bin it

buy cheap and nasty and you get what you pay for. buy from a good seller with good feedback and offering a long warranty. it may cost more but gives peace of mind

True, but running off its battery it draws around 28watts, but connected to the mains it is charging the battery and running the laptop, so chuck in a bit for inefficiencies and a bit of safety margin and I don't think it would be a lot less than the 90w stated. :thumb:
