Am off to the Black Sea resort of St Vlas on Saturday. Was thinking of Belgium, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia and then into Bulgaria. Its some years since I drove out there and am sure things have changed a lot. Some of the forums are saying stay in the EU and transit Hungary and Romania, but that puts a few extra miles on the trip and from what I remember of Romanian roads they are best avoided.
Any thoughts from recent travellers out there.

Last May we planned to return from Turkey via Serbia but the wanted €100 for a third party green card just to transit the country. In the end we returned via Macedonia, Albania and Montenegro. That route is not much help for you though.

The roads in Romania have improved since they joined the EU.

Safe travelling.

Don.
In sunny Turkey until 30th April.

OK, have sorted the route as best I can in such a short time. My plan is Dunkirk, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Romania crossing the Danube at Ruse into Bulgaria. Thanks to Don for the warnings on Serbia I have decided to go the top way. Do any other funsters have any further info on this route.

it will be mega hot there at that time of year. had a contract in Bulgaria so worked there for a week every 6 weeks for 2 years, flying into Varna and travelling north to Sillistra on the Danube.
love the people, but its very commercialised around Burgas and south of that. its where a lot of europeans bought property to await the BOOM which has not happened yet.

the roads in Bulgaria are much better now since investment from within the EU but night driving on A roads is to be tackled with care.

enjoy your visit:thumb:

Your pictures looks over 3.5t. If so, be careful as some countries you are going through require PAYG tolls with an expensive electronic device attached to your windscreen which you must buy at the border. You may be able to avoid major toll roads, but they do everything in their power to force you onto them with dodgy signing and making sure any useful alternatives are also tolled.
