:Angry:We recently purchased a 12 month old autosleeper from a local reputable retailer, and have had numerous problems which the retailer keeps passing onto the manufacturers, e.g. water pump problems passed to theford, fridge problem passed to the manufacturer, bodywork problem passed to Peugeot, etc. Is this typical of all motorhome dealers? To date we have no idea when any action will be taken. Suggestions please as to a way forward.:Sad:

They sold it to you, they alone should sort the problems out, if not, mention Trades Description Act and Trading standards, see what that does.

As already suggested this dealer is shirking his duties
If your ford escort breaks down does the Ford Dealer say its yer ignition coil go see Bosch,
Of course not, go rattle his earoles and name and shame them for your troubles:RollEyes:

You will get better results dealing with the Peugeot and Thetford service centres yourself.:thumb:

i am afraid you are being very naive thinking that a motorhome dealer will be able to handle your issues.

Thetford and Peugeot offer 3 yr warranties that they stand by, unlike many motorhome dealers and manufacturers...............

Ther are some interesting comments to night
The Motor home owner has no agreemant or contracts of sale with either Thetford orPeugeot so why would they deal with him
I am astounded by Swifts attitude of dealing with individual purchasers and the resulting Rod they made for their own back
You have no claims against anyone other than the selling dealer,

We have never needed to return to our MH dealer for the warranty work on MAJOR COMPONENTS or the BASE VEHICLE. Why include a middle man if you don't need to?
If you read the handbooks, they positively encourage this.

Fault with Thetford Fridge, repaired FOC by Martins Caravans, Wisbech.
Fault with Webasto heating, repaired FOC by MA Autocool, Norwich.
Fault with Transit stalling and rev light, repaired FOC by Marshalls Ford, Kings Lynn.

All work carried out a lot closer to home than the supplying dealer in Stowmarket!:thumb:

Your CONTRACT is with the DEALER - they sold it to you, it is their responsibility to rectify the problem and if necessary liaise with the part manufacturer's, NOT YOU!

However, if it is more convenient then you may choose to undertake the liaison yourself so that work can be done near to you, or at your convenience, rather than have to wait for the dealer to get their finger out and sort it, but that is YOUR CHOICE, not for the dealer to tell you to do it.

I wonder if this 'reputable' dealer actually isn't authorised to work on such items as the fridge and other fittings being only a 'seller' and not a 'workshop' and that's why they are passing the buck.

Either way, even if the MH dealer has the best workshop in the world, the Peugeot stuff needs to go to a Peugeot dealer.

That is quite correct but we would try and liase with them to get the problem sorted.

The other items we would sort in our workshop.

Peter

From what I can gather Peter, yours and a couple of other dealers are the only ones that seem to help rather than hinder your customers!

I so wish that there were more dealers who worked to your standards!

I agree that some things can only be sorted by Peugeot but others can actually be sorted by the dealer, for example when the drop down 'laptop' holder in our Fiat was out of shape a new one was ordered and fitted by our dealer, so not ALL base vehicle stuff has to be done by the base vehicle manufacturer.

Thanks to all

The response is appreciated, The issue is that they give a three year warranty, but won't do anything until the subcontractor agrees to pay, (I think this is no exactly legal). The will offer to do the work then, but in the words of one of the customer service managers, (yes they have customer service managers for each dept!), it could take up to a year to get a response. In the meantime we have a vehicle that is not fit for purpose, or leave it with them until they feel fit to get the problem resolved.

I just can't believe how complacent buyers of expensive MHs are in the UK.
Why are so many prepared to accept mediocrity?
When we bought our current MH we expected nothing more than perfection and we got it, unbid.
1)Everything worked as it should, chassis,engine & habitation-wise.
2)New mot from independant garage (although still 7 months unexpired).
3)New cambelt/tensioners fitted.
4)New brake-pads fitted.
5)Truma overhauled.
6)6 month 100% warranty on EVERYTHING - no need to return to dealer if anything went wrong or broke: simple phone-call requested to have estimate agreed and repair done locally. Even possible cambelt breakage covered.
Only needed one intervention in the 6 months: rear shoes needed adjusting up for handbrake efficiency (phone call, apology given, told to either bring it back or have sorted locally and bill would be paid immediately direct to whoever did the job.
All this on a £46000 MH? Nope, a 1991 Dethleffs A-class which wasn't even a p/ex or bought in stock, but being sold on behalf of a deceased owner.
We were assured, before we even decided to buy, that any vehicle he sold would be treated the same, whether owned by him or not.
In the last three years of intensive use the MH has needed 1 drive-shaft gaiter replacing (£2.35 off Ebay) and a tired alternator replaced (£45 with 12 month warranty).
From viewing to driving away took 7 days as the vehicle had only just arrived when we first saw it.
If Alan, owner of RollingMotorhomes of Slebech near Haverfordwest can give this sort of service as a matter of course how come dealers selling new/newish MHs cause so much hassle and heartache with their shoddy couldn't care less attitude?

Hi
You could try visiting Marquis at Preston, they are not only Autosleeper dealers but part of the Autosleepers Group. Unless this is where the problem started?

This is totally illegal under the Sale of Goods Act, the supplier is responsible for all and any defects and must rectify same.

Whilst he cannot get recompense from the cab maker (Fiat/Peugot whatever) he is still responsible for sorting it at the end of the day and his contract also under the Sale of Goods Act is with his supplier in the same way.

A buyer does not have to wait for his supplier to get authourisation.

Since Feb 2013….2nd Van
A mate of mine bought a van from a "well respected" Preston based dealer, the van was nearly new, low milage, he was the 3rd owner. He had a couple of problems, some the dealer got sorted. He then had another and the dealer refused, saying because the van(habitation) was still under a manufacturers warranty, the maker would have to repair. So he spoke to the manufacturer. They said..."Look at it from our point of view, the dealer has sold that vehicle 3 times, each time making profit. You can understand why we are reluctant to repair it" or words to that effect(in other words, the faults were there when the dealers sold it as a used veh and proper pre-sale checks were not done)....

I don't agree with the above, the customer should not have to be party to this stuff, but it seems to me that many dealers seem to want to take your money and then leave you swinging in the wind, whilst the manufacturer prevaricates. Its such a small community, as more people get internet savvy, websites like this will channel potential customers to those dealers who deliver, those that don't will fall by the wayside. My only concern is that more dealers are not on here and "The Dark Side" engaging with the motorhome community(their customerbase), which makes me think they've still got a lot to learn.

These type of threads would be ideally placed in their own forum category "Dealers"...Big n Bold :thumb:

Been down uttoxeter this am and the local car dealer has a van on the front, now thinking about it you would probably have a better warranty by buying off him with all his garage backup than a caravan dealer. Btw when my daughter bought hers off oaktree in Nottingham their warranty is by the rac not the dealer and she can go anywhere and get it fixed right away.

Why can't the guy tell us who this dealer is? Todds and Campbells don't treat customers badly, they are very good with after sales problems. That leaves Marquis who are Auto-Sleeper main agents.

Letter to company went in ten days ago, no reply, so phoned to ask for an appointment with the GM. Guess what, they are asking for the van to go in on Tuesday afternoon, when my appointment is. Just trying to give them a bit of leeway, but, really wanted to clarify that my understanding that the warranty should always be with the dealer, from the responses, it is clear that the dealer is totally out of order.:thumb:

Not necessarily so.

Certainly under the sale of goods act the supplying dealer is responsible and should not shirk this.

But, if there are outstanding manufacturer warranties that this purchaser has inherited, then these manufacturers - eg Peugeot, have a legal obligation to honour the warranty. Warranties are in addition to legal rights under the sale of goods act. Pragmatically this may be the most effective way of sorting out the issues.
