has me turbo gone (1 Viewer)

went to cantebury and back tues to friday

in a swift ducato 1.9 turbo diesel
going and coming back was hard work

had to keep changing gear
3/4 ocasionally 5 th
some hills
i was down to 35 mph
with. clouds of black smoke under labour
change down and the smoke cleared
im thinking my turbo has failed
there is a sound from the engine bay
like a whooshing noise as if the engine
cant draw enough air in to combust

when i got home there was a 2" hose
which had come offat the front of the engine
the pipe ended at the rear of the engine
i assume at the turbo
which was coated in oil
and it was dripping out
into the engine bay

i thought at first it might be the egr
but im beggining to think turbo

couple of years back we had a replacement (remanufactored) engine
all the water from the engine went through the exhaust
including other assorted parts .
but the turbo has worked as if nothing had happened
till mot time in march
just wondered what you think
turbo fail

im taking a good look and removing the turbo monday
as its been a busy weekend

Have you tried it after reconnecting the pipe?

Turbo trouble

I had a similar thing happen to me a few years back on my ducato 2.8 turbo, the intake pipe had blown off the turbo.I was driving on the m6 up by Lancaster when it happend , it was breezing up the long climbs when suddenly the van lost power causing me to pull in and crawl up the hills droping down to 2nd gear where as before it would have flown up in 5th. when i got home i checked under the bonnet to find the pipe disconnected it was slightly oily but more of a mist of oil in the pipe not dripping as you described as soon as reconected the pipe the van was back to normal it turned out to be nothing more than a clip that had come slack on the pipe. I hope that your troubles turn out to be a simple fix .

We had a similar thing happen with a previous motorhome when we were overtaking another much slower MH, as we drew level with it we lost power and hubby had to drop back behind the other MH and could only do about 20mph. We pulled over and found one of the hoses had come off (can't remember which one!) as a clip had somehow come loose but we managed to reconnect it and tighten it back up, then MH then drove perfectly.

some oil in the pipes from the turbo is fairly normal.

The black smoke was caused by excess fule not being fully burned in the engine
due to lack of turbo boost.

Blue smoke when on boost is a sign of turbo failure.

I would re-fit the pipe and see how things go.

It's a good amount of oil
the left side of engine bay is coated
And it's dripped down and made a right mess
can't do anything till Monday

It could be possible that without pressure in the turbo due to the intake pipe being adrift, that oil is able to pass the seals, and this is what's leaking.

Oil in the intake of a diesel engine can cause a runaway situation, this can also happen when the sump is overfilled, causing the sump oil to be ingested via the breather. before reconnecting the pipe it may be wise to remove any oil that's collected in it.

My intake pipe has blown off twice, but I pull over and reconnect it straight away, and as has been previously mentioned the pipe has a film of oil inside it, this no doubt makes it easier for it to pop off at the most inconvenient times!
