Hi Ian

After much searching for a high end desk top, I was directed here by a Fun member... Popeye

http://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/laptop-computers/

If I were after a lappy I would look no further .. you can have it built to your own spec

I was delighted with my purchase, top class service from ordering to delivery .. and if you call for assistance you get to speak to one of the techs who are on the shop floor.. not a call center.. or someone with an odd accent ..

With every computer purchased from us you will get low-cost telephone technical support, customer service second to none, and most of all, a new computer/laptop that you will want to show off to your friends and relatives. We offer a more personal service - please read our testimonials and then decide for yourself.

Many of the computers we build cannot be bought in the shops as we concentrate on selling high performance computers for the home, office and[HI] especially for gamers and professional digital photo/video editors. [/HI]

We can build a computer to your exact specifications, meaning you are not paying for parts that you may not use. The computers that we create for you will be to industry standards and exactly tailored to your needs. We only use top quality components, for example, all our memory comes with a lifetime warranty!

towing for 20 odd years but now have our first motorhome.
I have a 15 inch Dell Inspiron N5040 from Asda at £349. Works, windows 7, good Graphics handling, nice machine. If I was buying again I would still go for a Dell Inspiron but not from Asda! They are not standard Dell machines.

There are plenty of graphics and photo manipulation packages out there, a lot of which are free.

She's gone for the Dell Insprion 15R with the HD screen, so added to the Canon 7D she bought yesterday her pocket is a little lighter.::bigsmile:

She's just spent 3 years on cruise ships as a photographer after finishing uni, and now wants to try to make a career in photography. For some odd reason she doesn't think Ipswich is the place to do that  ::bigsmile: So she's off to Manchester in the next few weeks, just got to find a house share first, then hunt for a job before her money runs out. So if anybody has a room for rent? She's house trained and a good cook.

Thanks for all the replies:thumb:

look for a lenova best lappy there is

Whilst recently researching for a new lappy ( bought a Samsung eventually) I was put off Lenova by several customer reviews that stated hinges were weak and broke easily and units had to be returned to Germany for warranty repairs:Sad:

I would advise her to take out extended Dell warranty ..

I have two Inspirions, less than two years old.. both have problems, one occurred outside the 12 month warranty , the other unsolvable ..

No1 .. On mine.. Overheating, despite running it on a cool pad with integral fans.. Apparently a common issue with models with i7 processor..

Returned it to Dell under warranty but they failed to fix.. I now live with it running red hot with the internal fan going flat out.. this makes it almost useless unless on mains power as it drains the battery. I checked the core temperatures, at idle they are around 65c rising to 95c when working hard.

No2 .. Jan's with an i3 processor.. touch pad has given up the ghost.. not a software or driver issue. I contacted Dell who said it required a new touch pad, but as it was now out of warranty it would be at my cost. .. so she lives with it using a usb mouse.

I have heard of Inspirons having issues - and they only ones of the Dell range to really suffer, so I am told. Why I have no idea, but an extended warranty may be beneficial in this case just to be sure.

I must say, though many do not like them my Sony Vaio is around 6 years old and never had an issue with it - and I can assure you it gets some use and is carted around all over the world.

The battery hasn't the best life anymore - but as I say, 6 years for original battery isn't too bad in this day and age!

It certainly put me off buying another Dell..

I purchased ours as we have an old Dell Inspiron bought in 2007 that is still going strong .. albeit a bit slow by today's standards. Handy backup .. also have a 12" Sony VGN bought in 2007 for travelling and it too is still going well.. daughter uses it at school.. but I seldom use any laptop these days as I much prefer using my desktop with twin monitors.

Single screen not good enough eh? :ROFLMAO:

We've had this conversation here a year or so ago, was it with you ? I'm pretty sure I said the good days of professional photography have gone now due to digital. Naturally others disagreed and were probably right.

Once it was hours in an expensive darkroom, manipulating exposures, dodging and if you got it wrong, more hours and a fair bit of cash wasted.

Now, certainly a huge skill in using photoshop fully, but so much quicker and almost zero cost to get the result you want before you print it.

Apparently, good old fashioned photography is enjoying huge come back you will be please to hear!

There is as always a 'name' for it which I forget - but they love the exposure, not knowing what you will get and laying pictures on top of each other - it was on a news program over the bank holiday.

I saw that.

Wasn't impressed. How can you take any pride in creating something good accidentally ? It's like a monkey throwing paint at a wall.

Have you heard of The Infinite Number of Monkeys ? If you put an infinite number of monkeys in front of a word processor eventually one will type the whole works of Shakespeare.

I like that analogy - Monkeys throwing paint at a wall.....makes me think of politicians - but thats for another time!

Although, as you say much is accidental - could be a means to an end, in that it introduces the younger factions to the 'risk' of conventional photography and realisation that that risk can be controlled with skill, good judgement and understanding of photography rather than point, shoot and photoshop it later.

Guess we will have to wait and see what happens - it isn't to say that all youngsters do not use conventional cameras, as many do - but seemingly only once they have 'got into it' as a hobby.

Hi jim the dell she's ordered has an i5 processor, so hopefully will be ok. although its likely digital will her main method, hence the canon, her real love is film, especially black and white. She thinks she can use film as a usp when selling her skills like at weddings. Who knows, people now pay over the odds for vinyl records so she may find a nice little niche market.

Hi Ian

I wish her good luck.. clever girl.. you must be proud, I hope my darling does as well. :roflmto:

as for the Dell ..yes, the i5 is probably less likely to overheat.. and Jan has probably trashed the touch pad playing Facebook games..

would still suggest she uses the Dell on a cool pad with a fan... plenty of cheap ones about.
