I am a newbie
We are thinking of going to Europe for up to 3 years.

We need a van that is insulated and has an internal water tank as we will be visiting ski resorts for weeks at a time.
We think this means buying a European van, (not British) and left hand drive would make sense too. And the electricity sockets would be for European kettles etc which is good for us, as we will buy new kit in Europe.

Some questions! If anyone knows:

Can we renew our insurance on line after the first year?

Could we buy direct from a dealer in Europe? And can we then register it in that country , even if we don't have an address abroad ?

We really dont want to come back during the three years unless we have to.

Is it three years for a MoT in Europe? Where can I read about this sort of thing?

Has anyone else done this sort of long trip, and if so, is there anything else I need to consider?

As we are newbies, any help is useful. Thank you

You could buy direct from a dealer in Europe or look for a LHD one here, but the thing is if you want to register a vehicle in any country either here or there, you need an address in that country. Probably for insurance also. If you take a UK registered one, then you'd have to re-register it anyway after the first 6 months.

Dunno about the MOT, plus I think there may be other checks needed in other countries - but no doubt someone else resident in EU will be able to tell you that.

Be aware that some countries can charge a lot more for Insurance as well than UK...
Also not every insurer will cover you for a full 12 months out of the country, you may need specialist "fulltime" cover..
This site is packed with info and advise... Start reading up as I dont think you will get everything answered here on this 1 thread...

Good luck...

Whatever you decide there are problems. If it's UK registered you need a UK address and you will need to hunt around for 12 months cover in Europe. If you register it abroad you still need an address. Might find it easier in the long run to include a trip to the UK as part of your itinerary each year

If you buy a new motorhome in France...3500kg and under...it is 4 years before your first Contrôle Technique (MOT)...and then every 2 years ...and the cost is around 57 euros...:thumb:

But if you buy above 3500kg it has to have a Contrôle Technique (mot) after the first year and every year after that ...100 euros....Heavy goods:Sad::cry:.

That is where I am going today.....Heavy goods:Doh:

very new to us
Europe long term

Hi,

we just bought our van off couple who did 6 years around Europe when they first retired. (Not in this van)

They had a fairly new Hymer at that time but still returned to the UK every year for an MOT and to see relatives. They rented out their home and so still lived in the motorhome whilst 'back home' for a week or two.

They loved most of it, and it has inspired us to do it once my daughter is sorted out for uni either this year or the next. Life is too short, as we are reminded all the time.

Go for it, and good luck
