We're doing a tour of the Outer Hebrides in late May and June starting on Skye then over to the outer Islands after a few days. We can't decide whether to use the Skye bridge or to go to Mallaig and get the ferry over to the island. The difference is only about 40 miles and the ferry cost would be £40 but it might be worth it if the drive is much easier. Does anyone have any experience of the two routes?
Thanks
Mags

Bridge is a non-event. Drive to bridge, continue. We had come from Inverness so the natural way.

We did leave by the bridge to continue south.

Can't remember any of it, so must have been easy.

Havent done the ferry but the road from Fort William to Mallaig is not the fastest, however have driven directly to Skye over the bridge can speak for that route. Unless your wanting to overnight in Arisaig/Mallaig which is a wonderful scenic area and worthy of a visit (but can be busy so book first) its no contest just do the drive. If you havent been over the bridge its awesome, worth parking as you approach bridge on the long wide lay-by where the toll booths used to be and walking out onto the bridge just for the atmosphere and photos, or you can stop on the Kyleakin side and walk back across.

Whatever you decide you'll enjoy either experience, a truly wonderful part of the UK:thumb::thumb::thumb:

Been to Skye many times, even before the bridge. Problem with Skye is the weather, 2 times out of three it's very misty or raining, but we still go back most years. The first time we went with kids it was two days before we could see more than a couple of hundred yards. Having said that, it's beautiful when the sun shines. If you opt for the ferry I can recommend a campsite just beyond Arisaig, Sunnyside Croft. The road is a bit narrow but the site and beach are wonderful. ( they are open all year)

We've only been to Skye via the bridge, and then on to Uig to catch the ferry to the Outer Hebrides.

Lovely scenery all the way, and the bridge was excellent. We turned immediately left at the roundabout at the Skye end of the bridge, and stopped for a picnic lunch looking up to the bridge, and fine views across the water and back to the mainland.

And we stayed overnight at the C&CC site not far south around the coast from Uig. Lovely spot overlooking the sea loch. :thumb:

the road from Fort William to Mallaig may not be fast bt it does run beside what has been described as the best railway journey ever and was used in one of the Harry Potter films my wife said it was stunning I wouldn't know" I was driving".

Hi Mags guessing your coming up west side through Fort William make sure you top up with fuel its the cheapest in the highlands. There is a very convenient garage on the left as you start to leave F William with good mh access you'll find fuel is expensive further North and on the islands.

There is also a Morrisons, fuel and provisions. Just get essentials as the food and local produce is excellent on Skye. The drive there from Fort William is excellent. We usually stop a couple of times for a cuppie and admire the view. :thumb:

That's when we are going !!!

I have done both routes, the Bridge is the easier of the two ! There is an excellent co-op on Skye for food etc. But Morrisons at Ft. William is better for fuel ! Diesel on Lewis is very expensive ( But wild-camping obviates the need for campsites, so that makes up for it !) and there is LPG available at Stornoway !
On Lewis there is also a Tesco (no fuel) and an excellent Co-op !! I hope this has been of some help !:thumb::thumb::thumb:

Don't think there is much between them to be honest but I would probably go over the bridge, if you get a good day the coolins are awesome. As well as the C&CC site there is a site at UIg 2 mins from the ferry fairly basic but £15 night and you het toilets & showers as well as water electric etc
