Has anyone used this company or others to rust proof their van.We are about to collect a brand new Autotrail and cannot make up my mind if I should do this . Is it a good or bad move ?

no first hand experience so can only repeat what I have read in bad reports/reviews.

not a thorough job and vital bits missed like inside box sections etc.

How long do you intend to keep it for?
Fiat Ducatos are galvanised and if you dont scrape it will last well over 10 years without rust,
Putting gunk inside chassis and beams bungs up the drain holes and can make things worse, I would never have it sprayed into mine.

dont know about the X250's onwards but older ones were painted, usually white for motorhome use, up to the cab to Alko chassis flange joint as shown in attached pic (if Alko chassis fitted) otherwise just painted in the whole.

Hi Papa
Since the mid nineties ducatos have been electroplated with zinc which gives a thiner more even surface for applying the paint, the alko chasis are hot dipped so the coat is thick and uneven and does not require paint,
Take a look at any fiat van compared to the same age sprinter, Transit and so on, you will see a massive difference in the quantity of rust, (unless its been crashed of course and damaged the zinc plating)

Thanks for that.

The story goes Italian cars had such a bad rep for rusting that Fiat decided to galvanise every car it made sometime in the nineties,
I actually have a 2001 Fiat scudo in white without a single spot of rust on the body, even underneath, sills are still white under the muck

A shame British car makers, particularly Vauxhall, in the 70's and 80's didnt have the same attitude.

full of rustworm as it came off the production line :winky:

I have always considered vehicles to have a good life of 10 years and from then on start costing...

I used to buy 8 year old Audi's and keep them 2 years. I was always able to sell them for the same as I bought them and they never cost me anything on the MOT's....

Shame my current van has falling flat on that theory though. It's been a right lemon.

According to the Motor vehicle dismantles association, the average life span is 13.5 years. But there are not many 2000 reg cars about.
I would have thought it was around 10 years.

Depends where you live and in what circles you move,
Me being on the bottom of the pile have friends with 15 year old cars which are still going strong, Also I have a Fiat Scudo van 197,000 miles 2.0jtd diesel engine running smooth and not rust at all on the body

I have a 15 year old van and a 13 year old car but they are simple. if you needed to put a new diesel particulate filter or dual mass flywheel on either of them it would make more sense to scrap them. Luckily no such unnecessary fitments on either vehicle. Modern bodyshells on the other hand are far superior to older vehicles.
