Hi Mike is 70 in June. We have a 3.75 tonne motorhome and wondered what the process was for getting through the medical examination for the DVLA etc,

Can he go to his own doctor, or does he have to go to one of these specialist centres.

Has anyone gone through this and knows what is involved.

Thanks for any help.

Your own Gp / doctor will "sting" you.... Big money.
There are many private doctors who cater for the requirements of private medicals as used by HgV drivers, private pilot licenses etc..
Just do a web search looking under these things...
As I am far away from 70 myself ::bigsmile: I understand it is very similar to the test required for my HgV...
Nothing complex, just general tests like blood pressure, eye check, movement ranges etc....

Your own GP is entitled to charge you. The fee structure is available on the BMA website.
If you explain that its not for commercial purposes but just to enable you to drive your own MH then you may (often) find that there is no charge at all. Depends on the GP. Ask first.
The Doctor will follow the DVLA's 'At a Glance Guide to the current medical standards for fitness to drive'. This is available on the DVLA website. (not to be available to the general public...Whoops! You didn't hear it from me!)

Providing you have not had any form of angiopasty (stents), diabetes, heart problems you should be OK otherwise its a stress test on a ten minute walking machine (minds gone can't remember its name!)

If you cant do that, its a radioactive gamma ray test, right pain in the arse if you have to travel miles, very very expensive but DVLA pay!

angioplasty? Seems to come to mind.....What Peter is saying, they try their best to kill you off - if they fail, then you can have your licence back with full entitlement. ::bigsmile:

I asked at my surgery 5 yrs ago and they quoted £130 and said that there was only one Dr who did these tests and he was busy for next 2 weeks. I said 'ok ring me when you get an appointment' 4 weeks later I rang them and they said it could be another 2 weeks.
So,I found an Independent GP surgery in Cardiff and rang them-yes they could do it for me.
£90 and they could fit me in in an hour if I could get there by then ::bigsmile:
I've used them twice now and it's still £90-the exam is a bit farcical really-Blood pressure, urine sample, eyesight test (she went to other side of room and held up a bit of card with a few letters on it )
Rest of test was her asking me questions and ticking boxes.

Well I can't remember the actual prices at our surgery now but the prices are all on the notice board, for driving medicals and I was somewhat bemused when I saw that if you need a C1 for work it was (let's say) £55 and if you wanted it for leisure - it was £70 !

It was certainly well less than £100, but I THINK they can charge 'reasonable prices' - so I spose it all depends on how 'reasonable' they wanna be.

If the doc ain't used to filling the forms in, please do check and make absolutely sure he isn't writing down 'real' answers where he isn't supposed to.

eg I was whinging about the DVLA and diabetes and how stupid they are, to my Dr and he told me he'd done an HGV licence one recently and the question was, 'Is the patient's BP less than whatever?' It most certainly was - so the Dr had entered the actual reading. Thinking to himself 'Oh they'll be so pleased - since it's blatantly obvious he's fit as a flea'. DVLA weren't in fact pleased at all - they threw it back cos he was only allowed to answer Yes or No ...... :roflmto:

Thanks for that Mike, I have found at the form on the DVLA web site, and it is just a tick box exercise with a large bonus for whoever does the ticking.

We are due back from Spain on the 5th June, so I will have to try and sort something out before, as his birthday is on the 11th. There is a testing centre in Rotherham so maybe that is the answer. Do you know how long between the test and getting your license?

I take it Mike will not be allowed to drive after his birthday, if the license is not through?

Will he be able to drive the car?

Forgot to mention-I downloaded the forms and printed them out-took them to GP and then posted them myself.
I think it took about 2 weeks but I allowed a month.
I would phone them and ask about the car driving bit-sorry I can't be more helpfull.
