Best route Dunkirk to Italy (1 Viewer)

Hi all were leave April and aim to head for Italy. We will be catching the ferry to Dunkirk then have 2 week to get to the Italian border does anyone have any routes/aires/stop overs to recommend.

we do the same, but 4th may---off to sardinia via tuscany!

been this route may times!!

head for luxembourg to top up with CHEAP fuel!

then down for first night stop in either Saverne, or a wonderful town called Molsheim, both GREAT campsites with lots to do in the area.

Molsheim via lux is around 340 miles, but if too far why not stop off at camping Kocklesheur at Bettembourg, Lux city---spend 2/3 days wandering round---great city, and some super walks from the camp.

after Saverne / Molsheim head down to Switzerland toll free and quiet via colmar and mulheim.

get a Swiss vignette, cheaper than going thro france, and stay in Switzerland, if you fancy, go as far as Swiss Italian border to Bellinzona, good for 2/3 days, then into Italy.

Where are you going in Italy---can give you lots of tips!!!

Just follow what is now known as 'the Russell route'.
Dunkerque, Lille, Mons, Charleroi, Namur - turn right - Ardennes - Arlon - Luxembourg (cheap fuel fags and booze) - Thionville - Metz (up to this point no motorway tolls) Metz - Strasbourg (toll) - Colmar - Basel (no toll)-(entering Switzerland 40 Fr/30 Euro 'vignette' valid for a year and includes Gothard Tunnel) - Basel - Luzern - St.Gothard road tunnel - Bellinzona - Chiasso - enter Italy at Como onto toll road 'autostrada' and Bob's your uncle.

We plan on crossing the border may 1st and would like to visit Milan, Florence, Pisa, Venice, sienna, Sicily,Naples and finish up in Rome as we have the ferry booked for 19 June. Don't know if we will stick to the plan but that's the basic idea.

Slow down, that's like The Mille Miglia.

Savor it.

Cut out Naples and do Sorrento/Naples/Pompeii/Herculaneum next year.

Then Garda and Venice by train from Garda the year afterwards.

Never been to Sicily so can't comment on that but surely a holiday in it's own right.

So that's 2016 taken care of, next....

Don't know if you like World Superbikes but it's on in Monza at your time and has a great campsite.

Have you had a look at France Passion we went all the way down stopping at different stopovers every night for free except what we bought at the shops or whatever they had on each one and met a lot of friendly french people into the bargain, be doing it again this year.

If you go anywhere near Verona there is an Aires very central within easy walking distance to the town centre. Also public outside swimming pool 100yds down the road.

i agree with some earlier comments!
DO NOT go to milan with your van---far too dangerous--we have heard numerous reports of thefts, break-in's and general damage ie windows smashed.
if i were you, go to florence first, 2 good sites, one michaelangelo overlooks the city, 15 min walk in---allow at least 5 days to see all there is.
then follow this with a 2-3 day break in the tuscan countryside--or combine with san gimignano---good campsite here as well.
from here i suggest sienna---wonderful-our favourite italian city-again a campsite within city boundary--10 mins into centre on the bus.
pisa is basically a waste of time---can see all the sites in half a day, but worth a visit if only to catch the cheap train to lucca, which is great.

from tuscany i suggest that if you are not "citied" out, ok go to venice, staying on the cavallino side---early season camping sa savio, although large, is almost empty. get ferry to st marks square from cavallino return for 18Euro's-best way to approach venice.

if you are "citied" out, go to lake garda, recommend peschiera, or salo area.

as said, far too much to do southern italy as well---also we have heard it can be a bit dangerous south of rome re security if you are a brit, dutch or german in a motorhome or caravan---you are a target!!!
