After staying at a couple, we like them, easy walking for the girls and pubs usually close by.

Anyone recommend sites next to canals between Bristol and Birmingham,
preferably out of town.

This may be the one that Brian was talking about BROKEN LINK.

There is also a camping and caravan site nearby as well.

Hi all.
Can I dredge this thread up please. There must be many Funsters that can suggest other camp sites near our canal and water networks that many of us would be interested in.
Many thanks. ⛵

2 canal sites we've used are Sampford Peverill in Devon, back gate leading to canal, easy walk to village and pub and 1 just outside Chester, Netherwood touring site also gate to canal walk and pubs a few minutes walk.

Either of these

Well hidden and tight access for large MoHo, although have seen euro tag axles on there, but definitely no RVs. Right on the canal side camping, little basic but really nice

http://www.canalsidecaravansite.20m.com
Even though we discussed our MoHo before we booked. We arrived to be told, "have you booked, we don't have those on here" at 27' we we easily fit on the pitch although we were followed to make sure we did not touch the grass, the seasoners on site we not friendly, and moaned that we used too much electricity, Since this they have fitted a height barrier on the entrance. But your experience may be better.

Just outside Whitchurch, short canal walk to little cafe, serving teas, cakes snacks, (inc gluten free) right next to a flight of three locks which passes the time watching all that effort by others. Pub serving good meals

Petrol station selling basic provisions, newspapers, bread, milk etc

Reedham Ferry Inn on the Norfolk Broads has it's own campsite next door. Good beer, good food and also apparently good for fishing if that's your thing (not mine)

If up north why not try Bridge House Marina, Garstang. This site is right on the canal Abd a few of us 'solos' are meeting here next month.

I always stop there on way to and from trips to and from any Cornish sites as its only five mins from M5...also good for visiting Taunton,Tiverton,etc..

Thank you for your contributions. I have a plan We are going to visit as many canals as we can over the next couple of years. Good walking and cycling with loads of interesting things to see and do. Plenty of wildlife and more importantly, loads of pubs called The Swan or The Barge! As we find more sites we will add them to the thread. We are off this weekend, first trip of the year. Travelling all the way to Tanpits Farm on the Taunton to Bridgewater canal!

A bit further up North there are great walks along the Caledonian Canal running from Fort William to Inverness - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caledonian_Canal
Although I have never been to any of these sites I have walked extensively in the area.

Fort William - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neptune's_Staircase
· Linnhe Lochside Holidays, Corpach, Fort William, Scotland PH33 7NL
· Lochy Holiday Park, Camaghael, Fort William PH33 7NF
· Glen Nevis Holidays Ltd., Glen Nevis, Fort William, PH33 6SX

Fort Augustus
· Glendoe Road, Fort Augustus, Highland PH32 4BG

Inverness
· Bught Caravan Park, Bught Lane, Inverness, Scotland, IV3 5SR
A must is the Eagle Barge Inn at Laggan. What an unexpected surprise that was for me and my walking buddy.
http://eaglebargeinn.weebly.com/ - :cheers: :drink::party:

FYI, the Great Glen Way ( http://www.greatglenway.org/ ) takes in most of the canal walks although Bught Park Inverness to Dochgarroch (approx.. 6 miles round trip) is also a good walk.
Fort Augustus to the Aberchalder Swing Bridge is a 10 mile round trip. - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aberchalder

Hi Steve
Scotland is planned for September.
I have driven up the Great Glen on a few occasions but never stopped long enough to enjoy the scenery, particularly where the canals fill in (or open up!) the gaps between the Lochs. Looking forward to it.
