I have been looking at Hymer A class motor homes and was wandering how repair/servicing costs compared with Fiat, which I have had in the past?

I have read that Mercs are good and economical engines.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

There are many independent Mercedes specialists about to take care of the mechanical side of things. They tend to charge 50% of dealer labour prices and use genuine parts.

Depends from what era the engine is from. The older ones are far from economical. I find service parts no more expensive than anything else, with the added bonus of no cambelt.

We have a 2003 Hymer A-class plated at 3,800 kg on a Sprinter 316 chassis. It has a 2.7 litre 5-cylinder CDi engine driving through a 5-speed full-auto gearbox. I get 24.7 mpg, calculated over the entire time we have had it (6 years and 28,000 miles).
Normal servicing seems reasonable to me: it is done by a local HGV private engineers. I have just had a bill for £258 for an annual oil change service including filters, general check over of brakes, lights alignment etc and including the MOT fee. Some years it is higher when more has to be done. In terms of spares, I think all original parts are expensive for most commercial vehicles. For example, last year we paid about £90 for a sensor unit on the turbo charger and when the auto transmission fluid need changing (only done once and rarely needed) that's about £100 plus labour.

Looking at 2002-2005 roughly.

Also, do they all have timing chains?

As far as am aware all Mercedes engines have timing chains.

In that age range they certainly have timing chains not belts. Two engines available in Hymers then. 2.2 litre 130 bhp and 2.7 litre 160 bhp - 4 and 5 cylinders respectively.
