My new motorhome needs 5.5bar / 65PSI in its tyres, which is beyond the capabilities of my meger footpump/legs:Smile:

Can anyone recommend a decent 12v mini compressor which is capable of pumping this pressure. The Halfords one does not go to this higher pressure.

Thanks

Nigel

Hi , I bought a mini type one from Maplins for about £20 it seems to be just fine and can be left on for a while unlike some others :thumb:I think its ok up to 8 bar which is plenty.

I have a Truckair american model but I don't think they are available in the UK anymore. Might be worth keeping a lookout for one.

By the way, regarding the first line of your post, 5.5 bar is 80 psi, 4.5 bar is 65 psi - which do you need to inflate to?

I tried a variety of these but was not impressed. However last year saw a mains one in Aldi which is far better. It's quicker, easier, the connector stays put and the tubing/cable folds into a cavity. Also the built in guage is accurate!

Goodness knows when it will be available again. Just a matter of keeping an eye open.

I wouldn't suggest it's ideal to keep in the van but it's great for use at home.

Also don't forget Jim's tyre pressure monitors. Much better than having to keep checking 4 tyres 'just in case' they need air in. I can see mine without leaving the house!

If you need to go to 80 psi I would tend towards the big Ring compressor (assuming Truckair is not available). Also, I guess you are aware that at that pressure the wheels should be fitted with metal bodied valves, not rubber ones, which are only rated to 65 psi I believe.

are you sure its 80psi or are you reading the label on the door pillar ?

the label shows the maximum permitted pressure for the tyres and isnt necessarily the actual pressure you need.

my old kontiki (3850kg) had the same label but ran at 65psi rears and 52psi fronts
my 7500kg RV runs at 80psi all round.

i suggested the maplins compressor a couple of years ago an quite a few members bought on my recommendation and heard no bad reports.
i still have mine and its quite capable of inflating my 80psl RV tyres....albeit a little slowly

Tried them. After the first one went dead it was replaced (via manufacturer in Germany) When the second one did the same thing I gave up.

The 5.5 bar is taken from both the door sticker and autotrail handbook. The entire frontier range have 5.5bar all round, with the exception of the Navajo which has 5.0 in the front. The tag axle models also have lower presssure in the rear (3.8). Using my translator, 5.5 bar is 80psi.

well if your not confused, I certainly am:whatthe:! although I don't doubt what the poster's say here regarding the Maplin product I do find it odd that the very similar looking RAC unit powers up only from a direct connection to the battery (chroc' clips) and not via a cigarette lighter this is I'm told due to the heaver amperage of the RAC unit because it will inflate a FLAT tyre?????

The weight of a motorhome unloaded is similar to the weight of a fully loaded commercial van of the same make. Not due to contruction, but what else it has with it.

Therefore the tyre pressures are the same. Pressures in the normal 'french' based vehicles are high (in comparison with others) at around 80psi. You will find also, that some cheaper forecourt compressors found at garages will not handle that pressure - so always ask! Some of these top out at 65psi

Most good quality pumps will do the job, if you want capability from flat - then make sure it is a quality one as more power is required. Cheaper ones will do it eventually, but it will take all day!

the maplins product is rated at around 10amps so is ok on the fag lighter socket and it will inflate a flat tyre up to (assumed) 35psi in around 3 minutes and will run for 40 minutes continuosly then a 20 min cooling down period

The Ring RAC900 is rated at 23amps with a run time of 30 minutes then a 15 minute cooling period and has a max pressure of 100psi.
it will inflate a flat tyre to 35psi in 90 seconds

needless to say, the maplins 12v heavy duty is just £19.99 whereas the RING RAC900 is £69.48 (amazon)

thanks, that's what I thought so as I have no spare as (many others) I will either go for the heavy duty shown in a post here or the RING RAC900:roflmto:

The Ring RAC900 is very good and has been the best one of the bunch I have owned including the RAC650 Cordless which although I was assured would cope with 80psi motorhome tyres it doesn't!

Ring RAC900 arrived today and easily pumped tyres to 75psi.

First impressions are a great little ncommpressor which comes with its own bag.

Thanks for all the advice:thumb:

:cry:My present tyre inflator has given up the ghost. Can I ask if all the funsters' who own one, are still happy with the Maplin product. They are on offer at present for 14.99.
:thumb: Worth having a spare at that price ??

I had a Maplin one and it conked out after a few uses. I am currently using this one, and after 2 years it still seems to be fine.
