And at under £15.00 they do seem reasonably priced

The problem with this type of damp meter is that most Interiors have a vinyl type coating on the wallboards/furniture & the pins would need to puncture through this surface to get a reading. Much better to use a contactless type, target price about £45

Found this one.

A question then. How can a meter read through the vinal covering when the Vinal is resistant to water? I can understand it being able to read moisture in bear wood but cannot see how it can detect damp through a plastic covering.

Exactly, the pin type ones can't which is why you need a contactless one.

shouldnt that bethe other way round ?

the pin type will puncture the vinyl and detect damp in the substructure whereas the contactless type will only show damp on the vinyls surface as it wont contact the substructure

The pin type will get a reading on vinyl covered surfaces if you press hard enough!

Top tip! Do this in a place that won't be obvious! Around window frames and in corners is where you test anyway!::bigsmile:

There is a clue in the name, you can get a reading WITHOUT contact!

Still not sure how a capacitive sensor is going to accurately read through a non-permeable surface Jim!

We use 'em as deadman switches on our order-pickers. Wear rubber gloves and they barely work!

Hear what your saying.. no personal experience, only going by what I read, perhaps the ones on the trucks are calibrated differently or have a lower field strength ?

I'm waffling.. now .. I have a Google phd :roflmto:
