Stops all the crap from going up the rear of the van and protects any toad or trailer from crap being thrown at it.

Generally its the foreign trucks that have the spray guards across the rear of there trailers. I have made up rear mudguards from truck spray suppression material in the past, but it does not work as well as the American type of whiskery stuff. If using solid rubber across the rear it does cause wind resistance and therefore increased fuel consumption. If fitting then IMO the American system is best all round.

It's called a dirt skirt, and it prevents all sorts of debris being thrown up. A bit like a large mud flap.

As Gromit says they stop nearly all of the spray from blowing around the rear of the van whilst travelling. I have used them for about 5 years now and they do stop most, but not all the spray. I tow a trailer with scooter and it certainly makes less of a mess.

I have a dirt skirt fitted as I sometimes tow the car on an a frame, without the skirt the car is always seriously dirty on arrival, with it nowhere near as bad.
