Yes we went in August. Truly spectacular place....well worth a visit, some of the buildings are out of his world and so pretty.

Goslar was one of the places we went...that's real neat

Quidkingburg was something else...

You could also drive a little further out to Colditz, that was well wow!!!

We got most of our information from here..

Our first ever camping trip was in 1978 - a weekend in the Harz mountains. It was the end of May - bank holiday weekend. We were living not too many miles away in Soest.

So off we went to the Harz with our frame tent we'd just bought off some friends - took everything except the kitchen sink! It was freezing up there in the mountains - Rex was OK - he was a roughy toughy soldier but me and the kids weren't impressed!

Didn't stop us camping though :winky:

Can't remember the name of the site we stayed at - we actually found it again in 2002 - just by chance - going to try and find it again this year!

We went to look at the East German border in 1978 - very sobering - and when we went back in 2002 we even managed to find the village we'd been to that day!

Lovely part of the world and I am sure you will have a great holiday.

We toured the area on a motorbike and had a wonderful time.:thumb:

Stellplatze at Wernigerode is very close to the rail station (narrow-gauge steam) to get a train to the top of the Brocken mountain. Takes about one hour but the views are worth it, although it can get quite windy.

Is Colditz still visitable then. I went there about 10 years ago and they had just started converting the castle into a hotel/conference centre. It was good to see the tunnels etc, but can you still do that?

Have just been informed you can (2012).
There is a museum as well as a tour, either self guided or with an English speaking guide.
