I'm a newbie!
Hello all.

Can anyone recommend a good campsite or pub stopover in Cumbria for August please?

Looking at visiting Windermere, Ullswater and the Ravenglass railway.

Has anyone been to Ravenglass? is the road suitable for motorhomes?

Many thanks

Was up at Eskdale just a few weeks ago. There's a couple of campsites there - the C&CC site at Boot where we stayed, and Fisher Ground just down the road. The Ravenglass C&CC site is owned by the same couple that own the Boot one.

The landlord of the King George 4th near Eskdale Green also mentioned that he would be happy to let motorhomes park in the car park in return for eating/drinking there. He could also provide EHU.

The road to Ravenglass is easy, a bit narrow in places. DO NOT try the other way over the Hardknott and Wrynose Pass, especially in August, it'll be absolutely rammed and no fun at all.

We had a meet in 2011 in Ambleside and that was really good for walking to various places.... can someone remind me where it was please? It was the one that Dixon organised... It might be suitable for Karlu. At the side of the park off the main road.

It is Miller Field, right in the centre of Ambleside. Google will find contact details.

C&CC Ravenglass (managed) is a nice site with walking options and access to the narrow gauge railway but isn't that central for touring the lake district.

The Bowness site (as already mentioned) has handy access to shops and buses, and again good walk options.

Keswick C&CC site, close to the town and good for touring the lakes.

Also C&CC site on the road into Windermere, can't remember what it's called. Quieter than Fallbarrow but not as close to the shops.

For pubs check out my signature for a link to a Google map of lots of pubs that allow stop overs.

All will be busy in August, not a time I would choose to go.

Still learning since 2010
Just spent New Year at Ravenglass C&CC site.
Very good site, well kept, friendly folk. 5 minute walk to Ravenglass.
Had a look at the Boot site (travelled on the steam train) and it looks a nice site too.
Our MH is nearly 29 feet long and the access roads were no problem. Went via South of Lakes (A 590, A 5092, A595) and returned via North of Lakes (A 595, A 66).
We have stayed at the Kendal C&CC site and that is a good site, but can be prone to flooding. 5 to 10 minute walk into Keswick.
A long time ago, when we were tuggers, we stayed at Bowness-on - Windermere when it was a CC site, and found it to be a very good, central, site. Now owned by the C&CC but haven't been since it changed hands. 10 minute walk into Bowness.

As has already been said, they will be extremely busy in August, as will the whole of the Lake District. If you are going, book now, or be prepared to be disappointed.

Just come back from a lovely relaxing break staying at the c&c site at Ravenglass. Beautifully kept & very friendly site will definately be going back. Train just 2 minutes walk away & also Ravenglass & Eskdale narrow guage railway. Very picturesque village and nice pubs.

We always used to use a site called Scotgate as a base,it's just outside Keswick in village called Braithwaite very easy to get to ( just off main road) and pub next door that did good beer and food.
