may not be of much use but ours is a 3litre

but a manual and in a chausson welcome 85 and running at around 3440kg...we get on average 27mpg

I was once informed by car technician chap that his experienced rule of thumb was about 10% less in a automatic than a manual...but not always the case

so around 25mpg would be my guess ::bigsmile:

Really the engine is so powerful and responsive it's very easy to get carried away. I ignore the speed and watch the revs, keep it at or under 2000 and it pays dividends. The auto comfortmatic does an excellent job

I have a 3 ltr 2009 Autotrail Cheyenne auto.

Drive it steady and get around 25/27.........its not a proper auto so I expect you would get the similar to a manual.

Having said that its a dream to drive..you wouldnt know its not a torque converter type auto........its brilliant with this lovely engine.

Thanks so far folks.. What do you mean BEACHCASTER "not a real auto" ?
Mitch.

It's basically a manual box but the gear changes are done by computer that controls the clutch and shifts.
You can put it into manual mode but this just lets you decide when to change but it still drives the clutch for you. I've found it does a very good job in AUTO :thumb:

A big advantage is that it changes down on descents effectively using engine braking whilst you have your foot off the gas.

there is also a switch on the dash for carrying very heavy loads or very steep hills it effectively enables faster closer gear shifts. In practice its so powerful that the previous owner never used it and I can see why now

the 3 litre in ours seems to give best economy at around 62mph which is just over 2000 rpm ours at just under 5000kg gives 23mpg.

at 56 mph it gives 20.5 which i find strange but thats how it is.

Indicated speed? actual speed probably 53
60 will be near 56/7 and that's the optimum.
Because I have a KPH speedo I go by the sat nav :thumb:

I am drunk so forgive me but if you can afford a fourty plus thousand pound motorhome do you really need to worry about MPG? Are you really going to do more than 5,000 miles in it per year before you trade it in in three years time?

I have a home converted 1996 Iveco Turbo daily that can pull a 1000KG box trailer at 56 mph and return between 22 and 26 mpg depending on conditions. Do you need better figures than this?

Mitch.

From what I understand the fiat new autos are computer controlled auto changes.....a bit like the box on my Auto Toyota Yaris......these are not autos as we used to know them...My VW Touran has a torque contolled DSG gear box ( which is amazingly smooth ).

Having said all that.the 3 litre fiat ( computer controlled change) is driven the same as a conventional auto and as I said before you hardly know the difference....its superb !

Im sure a techy person will be able to expalin this in more detail.

Sure I can afford to drive like a nutter but I dont...................but I hate the fact that if I drive fast and therefore have to buy more petrol....Im giving more money to the bloody Government to flush down the toilet.

Who said anything about driving like a nutter? I save that style for when I'm in my MX5.

My point was and still is that if you can afford a vehicle of tens of thousands value and you're probably only going to do 5000 miles a year in it (approximate average mileage for a motorhome) then the difference in costs between 20mpg and 25mpg are negligible.

Many factors affect fuel consumption but the two most important ones are wind resistance and how hard you tread on the loud pedal. Wind resistance increases by the cube of speed, i.e. twice the speed is not twice the resistance its nine times the resistance. Wind resistance also doesn't make much difference till you get above 50mph so travelling at a steady 56mph (cruise control helps here) is much more economical than hurtling along at 70mph where the wind resistance is huge by comparison. Even the difference between 56 and 60 can be significant.

Well that`s our 13th year & still loving it.
head wind or speed

We have a 2008 3 litre Arapaho, been re-mapped from new so haven`t a clue what the MPG the standard unit gave.
Motorway driving at 60mph we have seen 29.7 mpg on a windless day, (just never managed that magic 30mpg figure) turn a corner into a head wind and that figure will drop to 20mpg.
So it`s not just your right foot you have to consider, wind and terrain can and will make a big difference.

Think Dave has a point (drunk or sober!). ::bigsmile:

Although my van is quite heavy, it's low-profile, I'm light on the accelerator and tuck in with the lorries at 56mph (shows 60mph on my speedo). Reckon I can't do much more than that so have never ever calculated mpg - life's too short! :winky:

We've got an Apache with the 3l Fiat and the comfortmatic auto box with nearly 30k on the clock ,had it remapped this autumn and on the trip to Haggers chester meet it achieved
28.2mpg, as it says on another post it all depends on your right foot.

Hi STEWART. J. We are looking at another Tracker and it just happens to have a 3 litre engine with Comfortmatic, so thought I was better asking the question from "the wise ones"
rather than wingeing after. We did over 5,000miles on our last summer away, so had the difference been 5/6 mpg it may have influenced our thinking. In light of the kind responses (as usual) we wont let a small difference put us off.. Take care all of you and happy travels..
