Ps.... you need to know your unladen weight and fully loaded weights to decde on 120kg bike.

A visit to a weigh bridge is the only sure way

3500Kg = Maximum you can weigh at any given time
4500Kg = Maximum Train weight fully loaded to 3500 and towing up to a max of 1000Kg
1 1750Kg = Front axle weight absolute maximum
2 2250Kg = Rear axle absolute maximum

You will note that adding them together gives you 4000gk this is normal it does NOT mean you can run at 4000Gk unless you uprate the 3500Kg to 4000Gk

Looking to carry a 120kg scooter

Due to the overhand that scooter and carrier is going to add a good 200kg to the back axle.

All guesswork 'till you weigh it. Might as well weigh it empty then you can be sure of the figures.

You end up with something like a bottle of milk in the back and all the rest on the bed. What weight pushes down on the back axle also raises the front, so the front can be scarily light, not good on FWD.

If you provide the distance from the back axle centre to the centre of where the bike will be and the wheelbase we'll soon do the sums.

Don't forget when weighing you need to include the weight of all the people who travel as well. Best to weigh it with the people in it as some ladies don't like to tell you their weight::bigsmile:

This may help you find the maximum payload of your MH.

Mass in ready-to-smart mode is defined as follows:

Mass of the empty vehicle (including on-board tool kit)
+ Diesel tank filled to 90%

+ 75 kg for driver

+ liquid gas bottle filled to 90%
+ fresh water tank filled to 90% (with 20 Ltrs. fresh water tank in driving mode)
+ fresh water boiler filled to 90%
= Mass in ready-to-start mode

When you have all this loaded into the MH take it to a Weighbridge, we were charged £5, and find out how much spare capacity you have.

Deduct the weighed amount from your maximum payload (3500kg) to get the spare capacity.

My MH has 380kg spare after weighing fully laden - but many are very close to the maximum and adding a 120kg (19 stone) bike may just be too much.

Don't forget when you go on holiday you will usually have at least one more passenger, clothes, camping chairs and tables, possibly the dog/s, food and, despite them not all weighing a great deal, when they are added up could take you close or even over the payload maximum.

Everyone should know the weight of their MH to avoid overloading as it is not only illegal but also dangerous to themselves and other road users.

Give wheel base as 3.75m and rear overhang 1.74m say 2m to centre of scooter load.

so a 150kg load would add 150+(150*2/3.75)=230kg to the rear axle load I reckon
l

Just as a matter of interest, good old 1950s 'O' level physics.

Moments about the front axle for the scooter:

150 * ( 2 + 3.75 ) = 862.5 kg/m

Moments about the front axle with respect to rear axle:

862.5 / 3.75 = 230 kg. on the back axle.

Moments about the rear axle:

150 * 2 = 300kg/m
300 / 3.75 = 80kg off the front axle.

Final check 80 + 150 = 230.

And this is why few MHs are seen with scooters on the back.

Brian is correct here,

, 230 kilos can be 60% or more of your allowable pay load.

as mentioned weight over an axle is also critical for example mine in 2000kgs over the rear axle.. when layden for touring ( and this is by weigh bridge ) its 1950kgs.
not much left for the wine on the way home:cry:

Motorhome review, swift 686 Vs Chausson flash03 (out and about mag)
Payloads both break the half-tonne barrier and the Escape’s 531kg seems light compared to the Flash’s 656kg, but both are reasonable and quoted after allowance for weights of driver and fluids.
cheers Kim

There is one more very important load to be considered.

Look in the vehicle handbook to find the maximum download that can be carried on the rear of the van (often in the range 100 to 200kg).

It seems to me that the weight of this combination will be far to large for your van.

Like a nose weight ,Highbridge said 80Kg was mentioned somewhere..so I stood on the tow bar...and it never broke. ::bigsmile:
Thanks ,but as Chausson owners know the "handbook" is full of all the things you don't need to Know and very little of what you do.. Eg technical specifications . Now in contact with the manufacture in France and once I have some useful information from them I will post ,thanks again Kim

Chousson Flash 03 payload

Have spoken to Chausson head office France they said a max of 100Kg in Garage

A Max of 80Kg on a tow bar
Then said to email a copy of registration document to them, so they would change the guarantee details. All in much better English than my french.

So if you want a scooter/motorbike, a trailer it is then .Thanks for everyone's help and advice .
Happy Christmas to all, Kim and Julia ::bigsmile:

You can see why electric bikes are so popular. And in some ways much more fun than petrol because you can go in pedestrian areas.

You are applying a simple static load equal to your body weight.

When towing the actual dynamic loading on the towball will far exceed the simple static load.

The problem for me is not really whether the towball or mounting pints will break (though occasionally they do) the problem is will I be insured in the event of an accident if my MH is deemed to be overloaded.

Does this plate indicate I can only tow 200Kgs?!

What does the 3rd figure mean? Is it to do with the tag axle on my 748?

Yes, it means you an tow a small camping trailer - other than that, forget you have a towbar!

It is a common trait with tag axle vehicles. They can have more wieght on the vehicle, but tow alot less. You can look into downplating, though it can get complicated with tag axles.

200kg towing weight what a waste of capacity that is.
they may have well just said 0kg as that would have been useful.

you would be lucky to get a couple of pushbikes on a small trailer under that weight.

:Blush:this give some info on how to read a weight plate:

Broken Link Removed

Question: as the motorhome has a MTPLM of 5000kg, and a GTW of 5200kg, if the motorhome itself isn't loaded to the 5000kg limit, can the excess be transferred to the weight of the towed item? For example if the motorhome in 'fully loaded trim' (ie all kit, food, clothes etc and people on board) only comes to 4500kg, would that make the GTW 700kg instead?

For some reason I've gone 'blank' on the answer to this!

Yes it can.
the train weight is the TOTAL combined weight.

could be hard getting a euro van much below its MAM to make it a usable for toad puling though, as it's the toad's/trailers GROSS weight which applies i would say you need to lose at least a ton from the vans weight.
