beginner, I don't like the newbie term
I have lost a set of keys including the only key to the rear storage compartment. I have called few lock smiths in somerset but they have all said I need a specialist automotive locksmith, which does not make sense, the lock is a normal type found in most house holds. I have watched hours of u tube and although many 6 years have demonstrated how easy it is to open a lock with a paper clip and parts of a pen, I find I lack their dubious skills.
I have been to my local caravan MH service centre - no joy there.
So does any one know some in the Somerset, Langport/Taunton area that I could go to a0 get the door open and the barrels changed. Before I watch more u tube?
Thanks in advance.

do you mean it's like a Yale night latch ?

if so, the easiest way to open is to drill out the barrel with a 4mm drill.. then open with a small flat bladed screwdriver.. takes all of 30sec

if not, a close up picture of the lock would help

offending lock picture

Not sure if I have attached the photo which to be honest does not show much anyway. It is a cylinder lock barrel which has a thumb turn thing inside the door.

Checked the lock smith links closest is 50 miles away, don't other people in Somerset lose keys?

Thanks all for your help.

If you really get stuck and fancy a ride down here to Ilfracombe. I have hundreds of old keys, I can usually find one to fit.

Try Taunton Lock and Safe - just off Bindon Road behind the convenience store - good crowd of people - very helpfull - they do have mobile units but obviously there is a call out charge so if you can get to them it will be a lot cheaper - they should also have the replacement locks for you

Two thoughts:-

Can you get into the locker from inside the van? If so it should be easier to get the door open from inside - possibly by dismantling the catch worked by the lock.

As any locksmith is going to cost a fortune the probability is that the lock is going to get damaged beyond repair any way. You could try to drill it out but, given the small size of the lock pins, I would just insert a large, strong, flat bladed screwdriver and turn it. It will smash the pins and the door will be open and you will have to buy a new lock - probably cheaper than a locksmith.

I broke the lock on my locker door with the key (lock was stiff) - the innards of the lock were plastic ! (2004 Burstner)

If I lost the key it would only need a screwdriver to unlock it - so much for security !
