Motorhomed for almost 7 years - now going nowhere!
An article in the November 2012 edition of Which Motorhome - page 109 refers to a "robotised" manual called Comfort-Matic. Is the same as the Comfortmatic Auto gearbox in the Autotrail? I drive a VW golf with automatic transmission so what is different? Are there any advantages to choosing manual - apart from the fact that they are more readily available?

I believe its nothing more than an electrically operated clutch on a manual gearbox.

a sensor on the gearlever operates an electric servo on the clutch...you still have to change gear manually

well i was close

I've got one in my rapido and its beautifull to drive and if you kick down it pulls the 4250kg faster than my car will pull itself
So far 27.6mpg and I've totally got used to left hand drive in no time.
You can put it into manual mode but that just let's YOU decide when to change gear which is pretty pointless as the computer gets it right

Is your golf a dsg gearbox
If so it has two clutches 1 for odd gears 1 for Even gears

Drives differently from an electronic shift
In that its seamless

I drove a 2001 vauxhall corsa with a view to purchase
At that time you could feel hesitation between gear change

Eventually bought a conventional auto Peugeot

Drove a ford transit electronic shift two buttons on the dash

Works van on trial four miles later returned it as dangerous

My Skoda 2011 has a dsg gearbox the 7 shifts don't notice
I have to check which gear it's in

I haven't used the fiat box but assume it to be a single clutch.manual box
Shifted electronically and you would experience lag between shifts

But as I say haven't driven one

Easiest way is to find one and try it easier to say than do I would think
As they seem to be rare

a few years
I have DSG auto on my VW touran............the smoothest auto gear change I have ever experienced and I have had many auto cars over the years.

I have the "auto" gearbox on my 3 litre Autotrail. Its a joy to drive.Different technology.....but still a smooth easy change no lag...I thought it was a traditional auto box before I found out it was a computer controlled change.
Fantastic power...................so easy...and over 25 mpg.

I wouldnt have anything else. If you like autos its a great choice.
( reverses very well too :)

The DSG system on the Golf is so efficient it returns more MPG than the manual gearbox:thumb:
