I don't know the legality either way in the countries you mention, but having on more than one occasion seen the resulting fire involving petrol cans in vehicles I would not carry one myself.

Surely every petrol engined car in the world carries petrol in a "can"?

I don't know whether it is legal or not but I carry petrol for the genny in a can designed to carry petrol.

Was a bit worried about stepping out of my Hymer today as there was a slight breeze and I had read someone died when a branch fell on them... In the end I took a chance...

Hey Bill what a puzzle
just spent five mins looking for the answer for you
It would appear every driving abroad site and forum has its own opinion.
Translated that means no one knows the correct answer I can confirm what the tunnel says on its web page, but it would seem ferry companies dont allow spare fuel or cans full or empty

Carriage of Reserve fuel containers on Eurotunnel shuttles
The maximum safe allowable quantity of fuel (petrol or diesel) that can be carried in portable reserve containers on board the Eurotunnel shuttles, per vehicle, is as follows:

Container Maximum size of containers Maximum number of containers Maximum total limit
Designed for use, fit for purpose plastic container 5 litres 2
NO MORE THAN A TOTAL OF 20 LITRES
Designed for use, fit for purpose metal container 10 litres 2

Still learning since 2010
When I lived in Germany many moons ago it was a legal requirement to carry spare fuel on Autobahn journies in case you ran out of fuel.
Dunno if that still applies.

carry petrol

Hi you are not allowed to carry petrol in a can in spain due to the heat you would have difficulty finding new fuel cans at garages.:winky:
