Yes i know its been done lots off times but i keep reading about different ones and i think i have confused myself (easily done) so which is the best? Going for a beer and curry now at least it will stop me reading about domes:thumb::thumb:

Since April 1846 but have always camped.
I keep thinkiing about a dome but more recently thinking about a self seeking dish as you can get a bigger footprint. can anyone convince me otherwise please?

i have often thought of getting a dome,,, then i remind myself of a few things:-

1. you need line of site to the satellite,, stay away from trees etc etc.
2. they cost an arm and half a leg.
3. limited reception the further south you go.
4. they increase the hight of your van ( if only by around 400mm ).

i then take a long look at my stand alone dish and remind myself :-

1. the whole lot only cost £150
2. you can reposition it anywhere to get a signal
3. its big enough to get a signal well down into Spain.
4. it packs away into a rear locker
5. it takes no more than 10 mins to set up and less to pack it away.

on the down side

you need to go outside
it dont look as cool

jeeeez.. you must have the luxury model... :roflmto: my first set up cost less than €100

but to be serious.. the dome has a few things going for it

* will rarely be affected by weather.. high winds etc ..
* buy the 'in motion' model to view while moving.. great for those with kids or bored co pilots ..
* can be used while wilding. even in a public car park no one will know you are using it ..

that said, I wouldn't pay an arm let alone a leg for one, I much prefer a manual dish .

I agree with the earlier list of pros and cons , that seemed to neatly sum up

the situation . We have a 40 cm. static dome made by Roadpro

expensive , convenient BUT very annoying that the slightest bit of

interference causes it to go off . I know there have been lots of ongoing

work to the Astra 2 satellite but i would not recommend our dome , if

buying a system again I would look for the folding type . We do spend

a lot of time in Northern Spain and thats at the current footprint limit so

may explain the "poor" performance

I will go along with the above, we have come down through France and all the way down to Zahora in Spain and the Mobilsat only let us down once on a heavily wooded site and it seems to be less prone to high winds than my previous Oyster dish.

I admit to using a Sky box as opposed to freesat and this may make the difference but not sure as the freesat box I have with me is so old it is gas fired

I have a Neta dome, absolutely fine in UK but also carry a portable 60cm dish and tri pod for getting around trees etc and for over the water .

I have KVH for 4 years good performance even into nouthern spain ( have not been further yet)
my KVH picks up both Astras saterlites and Hotbird at once no retuning think other systems have to re tune I have been told. Not cheap but excelent results.
