Trying to keep the cost down (1 Viewer)

We have been on too many toll roads the past few days, silly wife set Nav man wrong and did not put avoid toll roads. Now at Port de Vendres and heading onto Spain tomorrow want to head down to Alicante area firstly, taking up Brian the hill dwellers recommendations of Denia. Want to stay off the toll roads. We are loving France, the place is lovely, so much to see, we will be coming back over and over again. We planned most of our trip but have not kept to our plans as we see places we like and stay there instead. Stayed in Florac in the Pyrennes last night next to a little cemetery, it's a lovely Aire with stunning mountainous views. We had headed to Monastier first, was diverted off the junction we needed due to roadworks but ended up with lovely views by going a different way through Chanac and then got lost in the Gorges of de tarn, after an added hour to our journey we arrived at Monastier only to find everything broken at the Aire so onwards to Florac where we met lovely people, who even shared their wine with us. Now sitting with another bottle of red wine after a lovely day seeing so many places. We have appreciated everyone's posting their help has been invaluable. What a brilliant site.

our tom tom is like that you have to say yes to avoid toll rds when the natural insticnt is to hit the no button nice to hear your enjoying your detours as much as we do france is huge and so sparsely populated its unspoilt im so jealous of you still being there when im stuck at home

If you are in Port Vandres just follow the coast rd and you will come into Spain via the old rd. If it was me I would double back to le Balou and follow the directions for La Jonquera on the old rd as the coast rd is not for the faint hearted.

Fantastic Views

Travelled from Port Vendres on the old rd via Banylus and Cerbere to the Spanish border, fantastic views all the way well worth the journey, though my wife was gripping the seat most of the way she thought she was on a white knuckle ride.

Peniscola and Benicasim any ideas

On our way to Peniscola or Benicasim on the A7 at the moment heading towards Barcelona. Does anyone know of any nice places to stay at either place. The weather is quite pleasant, sad to leave France but back there soon.

Hope you stopped off in Banyuls for an aperatif of the sweet wine known as Banyuls.
One of my favourite places for playing petanque along the promenade.

throw the sat Nav,and buy a good road map,use National roads as much as poss, not only save's your penny's but ha your have a BETTER Tour and find some GOOD Places to eat and stop over's Enjoy,:thumb:

we find the sat nav takes us down some very beautiful roads that we probably wouldnt consider from a map

Some might say the driver blindly followed the satnav knowing it was wrong.

planned most of our trip but have not kept to our plans as we see places we like and stay there instead.

That's the way to do it. Let your heart rule. Turn satnav off, get lost find the real gems.

We love Florac and the drive along the Gorge du Tarn.

Dont wish to dampen things but please be aware and be careful, robbers are constantly patrolling along the Spanish coast roads looking for easy targets to rob. I know because two years ago I was one of their victims. Our motorhome was broken into and turned upside down inside during the day whilst we were visiting Spanish friends in Canet de mar, the husband of the couple we were visiting is a policeman in Barcelona, after the break in whilst making our report at the local police station, we were told that this kind of thing is a daily occurence all along the coast from the french/spanish border at La Junquera right the way down to the southern most points in Spain. This is not a somebody said story but a factuel first hand it happened to us.
