Considering crossing the channel and heading south for 2 or 3 weeks form about 29th.December.

What is the weather generally like?
Does it get better the further south we go.
Could it be better if we headed for the Dordoyne? and ? for the spelling

Thanks
Don

Going South

Hi Don. One things for sure it wont be any worse weather wise.
Do your homework on route and aires, as quite a few are closed at this time of year. Try the tunnel its hasle free and not much more expensive.

If you require really good weather then France and most of Spain can be very, very cold at night. The only place guaranteed warm is Morocco and even that is now very changeable. Check out other members already in Europe and scan the weather sites. It's all a big gamble. We went over to the south of France last April/May and the weather was so bad we gave up after two weeks and came home.

Don..

2 or 3 weeks .. ?

if looking for winter sun.. then as said, southern Spain or Morocco, but you would spend about half of your time driving.. so not worth while..

If you really need a break in the sun, then its would be more cost and time effective to fly out on a cheap package holiday

Certainly the weather in France can be varied, but here in the sun it can still be warm. When we came to look at the area it was December, with frosty mornings but glorious blue skies during the day, and we ate lunch outside, albeit wearing sweaters. We call these "limousin days", and get quite a few of them during the winter, much better than the grey cold we "enjoyed" in the UK!::bigsmile:
At Parc Verger we're about 2/3rds of the way down through France (just 10 minutes from the Dordogne), and we are open all year, so you could visit this area, and decide whether you want to go further. You'll get a Funster discount too, however long you stay.:thumb:
Further east you'd be on the massif centrale where it is two or three degrees colder, so probably better to avoid that. I looked at the climate figures for Pau in SW France the other day, and during the winter the minimum temperature was on average only about 0.5C higher than here near Limoges so there's not a lot of difference - as has been said, you'd need to go well down into Spain to see any notable difference, and that's a longish journey.

We are regular travellers for the first week of January, anywhere from around Valencia area south would be best for some winter sun... Can be very pleasant in the daytime but as already mentioned goes chilly at night.

Things to take into account;
Daylight is limited and the weather is usually Naff so I never see much point in hanging about. I work on driving from about 9am and be parked up by tea time as it gets dark. This gives about 6 hours driving ( single driver ) and time for rest/tea breaks every now and then. Sticking to non toll roads I allow 4 days down to Costa Blanca (benidorm).

Ensure you have water as most aires etc will have fresh water turned off.

If needs must maybe use toll roads at certain places to save on time, ie border of France / Spain south of Bordeaux.

I cant see any reason why you cant travel down, have 2 complete weeks in the sun and then shoot home.. Go on enjoy it..

ps.. November 5th, sunny and warm here in Benidorm 22 degrees. Been for a stroll along the beach...:thumb:

im going down on the 27th dec around 1am and hope to be in marjal alicante for 30th whatever the weather will be it must be better than here and spain is cheaper than here so worth the trip will be taking all non toll roads but if needs must will have to combine a couple of tolls so just go for it get it booked and enjoy it
also take the tunnel less stress and never a rough crossing lol
people say its much dearer but i have never found so we have always eaten on the ferry so once you take that into account it can be the same price as the tunnel
