Have been putting this off for a long time, but looks more everday that to keep up some level of independence I will need to aquire a scooter,to allow me to still accompany my family on outings. Walking is still an option but max say 100metres
so what I would like to know from you knowledgable lot is,

what make
type

bearing in mind I am around 90kilos
needs to be able to break down into pieces small enough for my 50 kilo wife to handle, should I not be able to do so, and be able to be stored in pieces in motorhome. We have room in rear lounge to store, would prefer 12v so I can rig up for it to charge along with leisure batteries.

Any suggestions and advice will be welcome

There are a number of factors to take into consideration, mainly comfort, Travel Distance before recharge needed, price (there is no need for a second mortgage) and if you are taking it with you portability (some are a lot better than others)

Do you want to buy new or used. If you buy used you want new batteries irrespective of what you are told.

There are specialists whom you should visit to help you decide the only one I know of in your area is Miller Care but there will be others.

If I can be of help pm me

May I also suggest that you consider the wheel size as well - I have seen some of the smalll wheel scooters bogged down in even the smallest amount of soft ground let alone muddy conditions where as some of the larger wheeled types seem to cope quite well

I was amazed when looking recently that you dont have to pay a fortune for one.
Go to a dealer near you and chat. The people there will go through what you need and will give good advice.:thumb:

12v only, even if they do exist will be ver rare..
Nearly all are 24v... However the mains chargers can be run via inverters.

If your going to break it down and carry it the back of your 700 then you need a "travel" type.. like this
http://www.valuemobility.co.uk/Go-Go-Elite-Traveller-4-(12-Amp)-Mobility-Scooter_Product-239.aspx

Shop about, you can get hand BUT be careful. No matter what the seller tells you always assume you need new batteries and add the price into the calculations.. By the time you buy used and new batteries you may find a new one for not much more cash..

Good luck...

Ref your van... My 2005 apache 700 only had 1 rear outside locker on the nearside, our previous van a scout had one on each side and I found this very usefull. I bought a door frame from CAK tanks and had in fitted by Dave Newel..
May be helpful and worth considering if you do have to load and unload a travel scooter..

The other thing I forgot to mention was, dont be tempted by the lower price of 3 wheeled scooters, four wheels are safer

Have already made our n/s locker go all the way through under bed full width of van, removed the carpet and installed wood floor to allow things to be slid in easilly. Much better now easier access, but could store on floor inside van as we tend to leave rear loung as made up bed when travelling as their are normally only three of us and daughter likes overcab to herself, wife and I use rear lounge.

Mother in law had a Mega Lite for many years, still heavy but breaks down, the batteries come out singly and it has lights/brake light/indicators etc so you can run on a road.

It also has larger wheels and suspension which is a must for stability, and uneven ground/allowing it to go up kerbs and mild off road etc.

if you are buying from a dealer make sure they are a member of the BHTA which is the UK trade body and they will sort you out if things go tits up and you have problems with the dealer.

as someone has already said 24vdc it really the only power source available now.

i can assure you people have just as many accidents in 3 wheelers as they do on 4 wheelers more women have accidents than men mainly because they don't understand the dynamics of climbing kerbs and many haven't driven before.

dont go for all the bells and whistles model go for a good base model.

my own favourite is the shoprider range and you should be able to get a Sovereign 4 for around £680 new off the internet (RRP: £2199.00), this is the latest version of the 888 model and is still a very good all rounder.
I got one of these for our daughter-in-law which we had taken in P/X about 5 years ago it was about 8 years old then, put a new set of solid tyres and batteries on it and it still goes well although she has stopped using now due to her medical condition.

scooters come in 2 different classes class 2 (4 mph) and class 3 (up to 8 mph), just because they have lights and indicators doesn't mean all can run on the road by law you need lights to cross the road at night but not to travel on the pavement only class 3 are designed for use on the road but have a switch to limit the speed to 4 mph so they can be used on the pavement. all class 3 vehicles need to be taxed which is free, but you need to display the tax disc and I'm out of touch now with the laws abroad.

I hope this has been some help:Smile:

i don't work with scooters nowadays but have spent 34 years in the electric vehicle / mobility industry.

get dealer to come out and do demo at house and try it in MH then buy it of internet if they are too dear

Pride are not bad scooters although this is made by Merit the second biggest scooter manufacturer after shop rider.

as for the inverter you need to realise that the charger although it says 24v it will actually give out up to 32 volts when charging.

so 32v x 2a = 64w and allow for wastage through heat etc i would say go for something around 300w a little ott but should be more than adequate which would set you back around £25.
