Bad month with computers. (1 Viewer)

1. Had a prob with my PC, (Acer, swear by them normally) so...
Did a back up to an external HD.
Re formatted hard drive.
Installed Windows 7 (previously Vista).
Installed Office, etc.
Tried to get my files back....no chance.
All the back up files are Image files and are er.BKU.
This is a format peculiar to Acer as I understand it.
Acer tell me PC needs to be put back to "out of the box" state to use backup.
All my work files, photos, etc. now on this bloody HD i cant get at.
Need the work files, want the pics.

2. Today:
PC played up, will start but nothing on the screen.
My lad has been (family geek) and he reckons either the motherboard or the processor is up the swannee.
Either way there is no graphics working, either from the card or on board.

Anyone selling an abacus and a notepad?

Are you sure you only have 1GB of RAM?
How old is the PC?

Here's something to try.

Turn off.
Open the case, touch the chassis to earth yourself.
Disconnect the power cable.
Remove the video card.
Look on the motherboard for an LED (green or red) - make a mental note - is it it lit or not (when not connected to mains).
Reconnect power and connect video cable to the onboard video connector (I assume VGA or DVI)
Power it up.

I'm assuming the device is set to use the video card and not the onboard. Removing the card will cause the PC to use onboard. This *should* get you a display.
If it does, get yourself to a position where you have an internet connection then;

Power off.
Open the case and earth yourself.
Reinstall the video card.
Keep your video cable connected to the onboard video output.
Power up and reboot.
PC should detect the video card (if not the video card or motherboard could be at fault)
Reinstall the video card drivers.
Power off.
Switch video cable to video card output.
Power on and reboot.

Yeah, Graham.
All checked, problem seems to be either with the motherboard or processor.
Ordered new ones.
Some folk say you may as well buy a new PC.
If they can tell me where I can get a comparable PC for the same money I'll have it.
Parts arrive tomorrow, should be up and running by teatime.
Not a bad price for the bundle, (I think)
£110 for mboard, 4GB of DDR3, (DDR2 board inn at the mo), processor and cooling fan unit.

All that been tried.
Same performance using the on board graphiics.
Graphcs card has been tried in another PC, working ok.
