Hi

We have booked the ferry for the end of the month only thing really planned is Reims, has anyone any suggestions on a route avoiding toll roads from there to the south, using aires or campsites or things of interest on the way, heading hopefully to Marjal. We are away for a month and may leave our van at Alicante (waiting for our insurance to agree this).

We haven't ventured this far before and if anyone has any ideas on do's or don'ts this would be appreciated.

Got our hi vis jackets, breathalizers, firstaid kit and headlamp covers is this all we need.

thanks Joyce

Since April 1846 but have always camped.
Just driving up now from st Tropez and stopped for the night in Reims . We found that most of that area is now closing down for the winter. Campsite at port Grimaud ( camping holiday marina) was great even tho it did spoil you! Can't believe that people would want to use an aires as we paid €18 a night for five star accomadation and the aires across the very busy road was €13 for absolutely nothing!

Free overnight parking by the lake/reservoir visitor centre just north of Mesnil-Saint-Pere (east of Troyes), but maybe that's too close to Reims?

Dijon is worth visiting on market day - their municipal campsite by the river is cheap and cheerful, if it's still open., with footpath/bike track straight into the centre.

Avignon's worth a look if medieval architecture floats your boat - the aire under the Pont Edoaurd Daladier looks utterly crap, but the campsite about a hundred yards away (Camping Bagatelle) is fine (if open) and not too costly - 16 Euros with a green card in August, probably less now.

and proper lace-up heavy boots so you dont get nicked for driving in unsuitable shoes (flip-flops) in Spain.

also wind up your door windows and take the handle or the up/down button off.....stops you getting stopped for resting an arm on the window 'ledge'....and i'm serious, it's happened and it is an offence as you aint in full control.

dont stop at a roundabout to ask directions from the pretty lady just standing there....you'll get done for encouraging prostitution :roflmto:

Salopian knows all about that evidently :Eeek: :ROFLMAO:

Red & white stripey board if you have a bike rack or anything else that sticks out behind the number plate in Spain.

Use Google Maps, 'get directions' and in 'options' tick 'avoid tolls'. Include additional destinations or it'll just take you a direct route from Calais, Rouen, Tours, etc.
Then look up aires along the way.

Thanks for the information, will keep you posted on our route hopefully as we go.

Are there aires in Spain? As we want the freedom of touring only using sites when we need to use services. Have heard that you can camp almost anywhere as now it's off season.
