Hi
Any recommendations for getting scratches off the windscreen?
Previous owner of our autotrail must have used wipers when the rubber was perished and it has left an arc scratch across windscreen.

If they are deep, you have no choice, new glass. Also it will fail an MOT if it's bad.

Since 2005
even light scratches in glass will be permanent and a probable MOT failure.

£50/£75 excess is a small price to pay for a new screen worth many hundreds and doesnt usually affect your no claims bonus.

Jewellers ruge will do it but if they are scratches as apposed to scuffs they will not come out, but you can reduce them! trouble is the sun allways shows them up.

many many years! since I was a kid
if it only a minor scratch

use "whitening" toothpaste and a cloth

1 wet the window area with water from a spray bottle
2 squeeze out some toothpaste onto the scratch
3 rub with a microfibre cloth in a circulare motion, or a polishing machine on medium setting. if done by hand it will take some serious buffing
4 wet occasionally and apply more paste as needed
5 wash area and close bodywork thouroghly when done

use whitening toothpaste as it has a higher and coarser abrasive content

deeper scratches are impossible to remove

if you can scratch glass with a plastic scraper, then its not that hard. on the other hand though, if caused by a small stone / bit of grit on the wiper then these are extremely hard to fix.

basically you need something harder than glass to scratch it and again as an abrasive to polish scratches out. deep scratches mean you would have to polish away more glass to make it flat again making it much harder to do and impractical

You may also find Duraglit wadding helps.

You can start with a coarse mix buy dipping the wadding into a some bicarbonate of soda.
Then go finer using Duraglit alone.

Duraglit is also useful for removing scratches from plastic. I've even used it successfully on ski goggle lenses.
