We stayed in the "aire" by the Calais marina last night on the way home from Switzerland.
We got charged 7 euro's for the pleasure by the Calais council and had a gang of youths hanging around till nearly 2 am.
Not causing trouble or anything but noisy.
Not a lot of fun:Eeek:

Not sure I could recommend this aire to anyone especially for use at weekends!!!!!

we stayed on the Aire in Brugge the night before we caught the ferry. It was 15E but included electricity and was only a 10 min walk into the town which was nice to walk round & eat in. only a short drive from Calais.

€15 sounds a tad expensive to me for an air.. can get a site using the ACIS book for less with electric thrown in and water. There are several sites just down the road in West-Vlaanderen on the N34 coast road very close to Ostend... especially in Westende village right on the sea front.

IMO .. Calais Aire has always been a dump , best avoided overnight (as you discovered) , but useful for dumping and filling up

Better place is Citi Europe, where there is a dedicated motorhome parking place

We have stayed there very many times and to date have never had any problems. I think you may have just been unlucky on this occasion, unless anyone else knows differently?

We did not go there but our neighbour advised it was full. He also said that they have reduced the area you can park in.
I would have moved to it else.

Yes, they're working on a section of it at the moment but we've never had a problem finding space there... :thumb:

I stayed on the Citie Europe aire on Wednesday and it was almost empty.
The restaurants in Citie Europe stay open quite late, so I often go in there for a meal.

Moules marinière and Chips €9.95. delicious.

Yes it did chuck it down a bit. Wall to wall rain from Antwerp to Calais and quite a few incidents on the Motorway.

Likewise - we use the Bassin Ouest Marina parking area as a second choice if the aire by the port/beach is full. Only problem we had was when they put a fun fair all over it one Easter and we had to drive to Gravelines instead.

Both Calais aires are run by the Camping Municipale next door to the port aire, so you're expected to pay for Bassin Ouest.

stayed there on Friday night Lashed down later in the evening but no problem there. Caught the tunnel at 0750. Only problem was we were so intent on finding the booth etc in the lashing rain, that we did not see a sign for the dog passport office.:Eeek: Likewise with two other couples who hadn't seen any sign Has anyone had this problem as the signage may need sorting out?

They must be quite old pictures, because I haven't seen a height barrier on that Aire in the last few years.

Last year (2011) September first time for us returning to UK with Toby, our dog and we missed the Dog passport control area, so had to drive through checkout and go back out to dog control area, you need to look up at the signs far right, bit mustard coloured Paw print, they have their own car park big enough for motorhomes and cars, once you know it's there you can't miss it.

Also Cite Europe shopping centre is very big, lots of restaurant's, we have twice used the chinese one, 3 courses for 8.50 euro's, bargain

OK. Just in case anyone is worried about a height restriction, there isn't one.
There is a very slight slope though, but not enough to stop your fridge working.:roflmto:
Just follow signs for Bus parking and you'll find it.:thumb:

OK, its no beauty spot but its a lot of fun and you can get beautiful sunsets and also nice walks along the beach. Last Friday it was quite full and the majority were Brits!:thumb:
Great for people watching and van watching:ROFLMAO:
The area is regularly patrolled by the police. We don't mind paying 7e. All told we paid 24euros for overnight stops the last two weeks we were in France. Can't begrudge that:Smile:

Just be on your guard about 6 months ago a member off the other forum D/SIDE did mention he was robbed while he was shopping in Cite Europe while parked on the Cite europe Aire there....
We all know this can happen and does happen in UK,SPAIN, PORTUGAL, and can happen but less likely in France.....if going shopping and there is a fellow camper there just ask them to keep an eye on your van and you do like wise...if you are parked on your own then leave one person in the van.....just be cautious:thumb:
Also we park on the Calais Aire sea front well lit (port ) quite a lot as its not far from us...we have not seen any problems for about 3 to 4 years now as the police do drive around a lot...But while we was in the UK we met a Brit who had just come back from France around 4 weeks ago...had his bikes pinched from the rear of his motorhome....the steel rope covered in plastic about 3/8 thick bike security lock had been cut clean in half..must have been something like bolt cutters (he had the rope with him)...he said he had parked on the entrance next to the borne as he was late in:Doh::cry:.....he also said the bikes were not worth much money but annoyed they had pinched them......also keep your eyes out in any sort of camping area Site or Aire not just for yourselves but for other campers that may have travelled many miles and be tired....sock on..
We do ..we also leave our blinds open till the very last minute normally after midnight

All of the above + the bakery and the chippy are really handy :thumb:

Does anyone know where they unload the little fishing boats and if they have a similar arrangement for selling their catch as they had in Boulogne...?
It used to be a real bonus to fill the fridge with fresh fish, more or less straight off the boat, on the way home
