As I was planning a winter trip hopefully skiing in the Alps so I purchased some mud and snow (M & S) tyres and went today to my tyre fitter to get them fitted to a spare set of rims I bought. He didn't want to fit them and told me I had to have van/truck tyres only.
Begs a couple of questions.......
Some alpine passes at certain times require snow or mud and snow tyres, surely I must be able to have a set on my camper?
Is the tyre fitter correct in saying if I fitted M & S tyres to my van it would fail an MOT and I would not be legal?
Van is a 1996 Renault Master.

Tyres were Cooper Discoverer M + S 235/75 16 - same dimensions as normal tyre. Not sure what to buy now.

If they are the right load/ speed rating, I would find a different fitter!

We also go skiing in our van.
I've got Michelin Mud & Snow tyres on all 6 wheels and passed all MOTs including one 2 weeks ago. In some ski regions of Europe you have to have them fitted by law in the winter and also in most ski regions you must have chains as well.
Great site for info on skiing in a van here http://www.motorhomeski.com/

Hi there treeman, the size that you have posted is a 4+4 tyre size so im sure that the load rating would not be correct, definately the wrong fitment for that vechicle.in my opinion a 225/75/16 commercial van tyre would be the size to fit but you are very limited which brands are marked m+s.give me a ring on 07802 661334:winky:
regards brian

Original tyres were Pirelli Citynet 118/116 R - so I take it from the chart that is 1250kg. (They were all slashed by some local yob!).

The Cooper Discoverer M+S are 108 S - so 1000kg. (Camper Max gross is 3500kg.)

On the vehicle when it was MOT'd were Bridgestone Desert Dueler 99 Q and a Michelin X 110/108 N so they seem as unsuitable as the Coopers I asked to be put on? These were on temporary to do MOT but are too small as only 205 75/16 so make gearing too low - but they passed MOT!

We had a VW camper with car tyres on it once!

It passed a previous MOT with them on! There are good and bad MOT testers out there!

I changed them for 8 ply rated (van) tyres as soon as I noticed the problem!

You should note that the sum of all the load ratings of the tyres DOES NOT NECESSARILY make them suitable for your vehicle.:Eeek:

You need to look carefully at the AXLE load limits to determine tyre suitability.

In the case of your Renault, you will almost certainly have a rear axle load limit which exceeds the 1000kg per tyre that you quote!

I'm afraid, as already mentioned, you need proper light commercial vehicle M+S tyres.
