But it wasn't 'dealt with professionally'was it as the travellers obviously decided to leave themselves?

Ray Harding, chief executive of West Norfolk council, said: “This has been a good example of joint working. Police brought enough resources to deal with any issues should they have arisen.

“The situation was monitored throughout the night through our CCTV control room and by Police Officers on the ground.

“The unauthorised encampment has now moved off and we are pleased that the matter has been dealt with speedily and peacefully. The Tuesday Market Place is now open and staff have cleared any remaining debris.

“We are grateful to the police for their support and prompt action which has enabled us to minimise any disruption to local businesses and residents.”

Supt Dave Marshall, West Norfolk’s policing commander, said: “This incident was dealt with swiftly and efficiently by local officers working in partnership with our colleagues at the council.”

To say this was not dealt with professionally is simply ridiculous. What more do you want, a public hanging from a lampost. The fact that they knew they were under surveillance and the authorities meant business was probably why these people decided to move. Honestly, there are some who will never be satisfied and can't wait to have a go. The Council and the police working together did their jobs on this occasion and deserve recognition for it, not some snide remark.

I agree with you that in this case the legislation and the authorities use of it has worked exactly as intended.

However, I cannot help wondering that, if they had not been cooperative, I.e. from the serious travelling community, would it have been resolved as quickly. It seems to take at least a fortnight and all sorts of court hearingS to get rid of serious travellers, and the mess left behind is horrific. I think the locals and authorities were lucky.

As I implied at the start of this thread, these 'travellers' seemed to be just a group of pilgrims in motorhomes just pushing their luck!
We have been moved on whilst overnighting on a car park in France. We were with three other vans of various nationalities and were only there because the local aire was waterlogged.
The police waited and only moved us on in the morning, were very polite and happy with our excuses and apologies . We moved on without trouble.
Was this incident any different to the one in Kings Lynn? I wonder if the local rags were hoping to get their own little 'Dale Farm' story to report!

Having said that, we never stayed long enough to see ourselves in the local paper!
