Better get the computer repaired.

Only way to test is fill tank, log miles, repeat 4 times then work it out.

"Economy wise, it is a vast improvement over our "old" 2.8 Fiat, same driving now gives us almost 27mpg average when the old van did 22 at best! "

Blimey I've never owned a car that did that much never mind a motorhome.
My last RV 2009 Ford V10 did 6 or 7 if I was lucky my current van does 24 / 25 if I keep it at no more than 60mph.

I was in town yesterday in my car, stationary in traffic for around 10 minutes and the computer showed i was getting 14.7mpg

take no notice of the computer...it's only a conservative estimate.

full tank, drive until almost empty then refill....check miles against fuel used.
then do it again over a further 4 or 5 tank fulls.

that will give you a proper mpg figure.

I have a 2007 Bessacar E435 with a 2.2 100hp engine and for ages I thought it was doing around 28 mpg going by the onboard computer, then i decided to do the fill up to fill up to see how acurate the onboard computer is, well the computer is 5 mpg out, in reallity the van is only doing 23/24 mpg and I have kept a record of every fill up for the last 2 years and the figures are consistant. I even had it in the garage because I thought the milage should be better and they couldn't find anything wrong.

So don't believe what the computer tells you.

Just back from 4 weeks n continent. traveled at 90kph on motorways and best I got was 32mpg, brim tank to brim tank. funnily enough the computer was reading between 1.5-1.8pg lower than we achieved. 2.3 130 hp fat with low profile van.

Thought i would check the mpg when we got our new toy, first few miles on country lanes 15-20 tHen steady run up the A55 slowly increased to a very impressive 42.
Stopped at Chester services put on me glasses to discover we were recording average SPEED

To the OP, was the computer reading instantaneous consumption or average? I have great difficulty believing that your big motorhome is that economical in reality. Wife has just bought a 55 plate Focus 1.8 TDCI which on first full tank has given average of 51MPG mixed motoring (this is calculated by me from fuel required to fill up over miles covered. I have a 2.0 JTD Ducato SWB panel van on a 55 plate ad that has averaged 27.6 over its first tankful which included Bristol to Telford at steady 70MPH plus lots of short local journeys. On board computers are notoriously optimistic so as others have said the only accurate way is tankful to tankful and some simple maths, I take a gallon as being 4.54 litres.

Always makes me smile when funsters (and others) claim remarkably low fuel consumption based on the on-board computer, or even on a single tankful. It's just not a realistic average, taking no account of varying conditions, different driving requirements, temperature (fuel expands when it's hot) or plain and simple faults in the apparently fool-proof computer.
The only way to get a sensible, real-life average (assuming you don't have manufacturer's test-bed facilities) is to calculate it over an extended range and many tanks full of fuel.

My motorhome weighs 3,800 kg (but only of it's fully loaded) and over 32,090 miles the average fuel consumption is 24.7 mpg. That, of course, assumes the odometer is recording distance accurately (a big assumption) and allows for rounding in my conversions from litres to gallons (4.54609) and kilometres to miles (1.609344).

I am in a panel van with no big luton or widened body etc.
I drive at 50mph on single carriageway and 56-58 on dual carriageways and motorways. I keep the revs below 2500rpm and short shift.

Over the last 3 fills I have got 30.9mpg to 32mpg. But I haven't done a long distance trip on motorways yet.

I would be surprised if you are getting that much to be honest...

I have a Autotrail Tracker FB 2.3 euro 5 engine and have never got anything near as good as that.:thumb:
Approx 26mpg over 1650miles in Spain. Probably 30 and a bit mpg on the motorway - steady 55-60 at approx 2000rpm.
My fuel computer says approx 600 miles on a tank (90L) when I am on the motorway but dropped to 200 miles in the mountains.
In the mountains I am sure I was well below 15mpg. :Eeek::Sad:

Drove down to Devon and my comp averaged 32mpg, changed site yesterday and had to refuel locally at a Murco station at £1.43 a ltr, i'd topped up at home at Asda at £1.34/ltr so was a bit miffed, did another 100 miles an my average went to 36 mpg and the motor did feel sweeter.....so is there any truth in Supermarket fuel being inferior?
