Hi guys looking for advice here. Someone has posted a very nasty review on yell.com about the wife's business, I have emailed them to request removal but have had no reply, do I have a right to have it removed? If so how do I go about it.

Thanks.

They are very hard to get rid of Ian. Some peoples business have been ruined by such reviews. The only real way to combat it is to have a lot of good reviews. I am sure we can arrange that :winky: or you could ask/encourage all your good customers to review it so the bad one is out-weighed.:thumb:

I agree with Jim.

We had the same problem once and did go the legal route but you might find it more trouble than its worth.

Genuine reviewers will diminish the damage of one nutty post.

more money for us poor solicitors... good

More money for my fellow vultures.. sounds good to me.

Seriously ... anyone has the right to fair comment. It is one of the defences for deformation or slander.

Where does fair comment start and end? that is the question.

If you have loads and loads of money see a solicitor... but my advice is similar to JIM's .. Not knowing what the review is about I could not advise further.

We had a stupid review on the campsite.

I added another review, and posted telling the truth that the family were scummy dirty morons and that they had slagged us off because they were told to leave the site.

They were told (not asked) because their children were feral, dirty, rude and down right obnoxious. Their dog crapped every where and they virtually refused to clean it up.

When the children started throwing stones around they were kicked off.

We added to our own review advising any other dirty scummy people not to come to the site otherwise the same thing would happen.

So in effect turned a crap review into a PR excerise because all the "normal" people that read it, wouldn't want to stay on a site with "scummy people so like the fact that we had chucked them off!

The guy that posted the review deleted it in the end! Result:thumb:

Thanks guys, I presumed that as Jim has pointed out on here that we can't post anything about dealers unless it is true, the same would apply on yell. The reviewer claims to have had three terrible experiences which I know is untrue.

If people are going to make these claims they should have to provide proof if asked to do so, or face legal action.

Sorry I got the company wrong, its on Thompson local not yell.:Blush:

Joe had one from the cotton arms over the jubilee weekend, apparently because the weather was bad someone claimed it was too busy in the pub. You can't win sometimes it's like feedback on eBay though, it can be dangerous. However Ian, most people will see through reviews I know we do. :thumb:

Hi Olley,
Being in the B&B trade I can sympathise only too well with bad reviews. They can make or break a business. All the accommodation websites encourage customers to leave reviews but many give no right of reply and will only remove them if abusive (at their discretion).

I am all in favour of naming & shaming bad providers but what happened to complaining. Had a review recently about complaining abouty noisy toilets and plumbing. Turned out the person in next room was ill and kept using the loo and shower all night. Not my fault but if he had complained to me in the morning I would not have charged him. Instead a snotty review.

I agree with other sentiments, eventually other good reviews will far outweigh the one bad one but not much help now. Unfortunately it is something we have to live with in the internet age.

I'm sure people will see through it. Three bad experiences come off it. If I have one bad experience I am wary the second time if I give them a second chance. Three - just wouldnt happen. If as some one said your wife's business is a hairdressing one. I would have complained the first time to the manager or owner. I wouldn't give a bad hairdressers a second go.

Try and see if your wife can get some positive feedback from regular customers.

I looked at a review for a campsite in Doprset a while back and some moron had posted stating that the site itself was OK but very annoyed that the fish and chip chop up the road was always too busy to get in:Doh:

No matter how much we would like to help, too many new positive comments at the same time would look iffy too. Better to offer your clients some feedback forms and put their quotes up.

I was in Buxton a few weeks ago and wanted to place a campsite review. I didn't know how to say what I wanted to say constructively, so didn't give one at all. It still niggles me.

Unfortunately these 'open access' sites are open to 'trolls'. My chum had a bad review for his pub B&B on Trip Adviser and placed a posting on his website advising people to ignore it.
It was out weighed by the good comments and business is booming.
This is the price we pay for 'free speech'.

Couple of years or so.
We received an extremely bad review on google which was quite nasty about our staff. The guy had a gripe as we would not give him a refund on an item, the reason being he came back in saying he'd found the same item cheaper else where and wanted us to give him either part or all of his money back. The item was not the same as ours as it was made by a different company. He was rude and nasty and demanded his rights in an angry manner.
We refused his request under trading regulations as the item was not faulty.
We reported his review to google as it made no mention of the genuine reason, it just slagged off our shop and staff.
They removed all references he made about our staff, but left on his views of our shop.
I spoke with consumer direct and they said there was nothing we could do about it as it was his view of our business and google and removed the offensive parts.
They instructed us to reply to his views, which we did, where we explained the story in its true form. Nothing was ever heard again from him and his review and our reply has had no effect on our business.

The internet has made it very easy to hide behind a keyboard and make nasty comments.
These type of people are weak minded people who care nothing for others feelings, or in this case you and your business and your future.

I've practically given up on the wildcamping forum (wc.co.uk) after seeing some of the nasty posts some motorhomers make on there - and these are fellow motorhomers who we could be parked up next to one day.

You are best speaking with yell.com, ask if they can remove or edit the review. Explain to them this could be extremely damaging to your business.
If they don't remove it, sit down and compose a reply. Don't post the first thing you come up with, make sure its good for your business in the way it answers his review.

Do you have to pay to be in the directory? If so threaten them with your wallet may work?

Aren't reviews marked by stars. If we see 4.5 starts coloured, then we know there is just somebody who's taken their ball home. If everybody else is happy and there is one dissatisfied customer, who do we believe? ::bigsmile:

my advice personally would be to firstly get others to add positive reviews, and secondly reply to the review apologising and offering some kind of reparation be that offering to put x amount to their next hairdo with another hairdresser etc (obviously get the hairdresser to call first!)

In that case, anyone reading the review will see that you were man enough to hold up your hands, and offer some recompense. People are not daft, and they know, especially in hairdressing, that you cannot please everyone. Seeing someone offer that will do wonders, and the bad review can then be turned into a positive.

Worst reponse to a review is one that appears either aggressively defensive, or one that denies all responsibility - it may be unfounded or unfair, but to the viewer of the posting, they will be much more responsive to people that stand by their word - even if the complainant refuses to accept the offer.

Looking back to the time it was made, we think it might be a lady who had a hair cut and then asked if she could sit in the salon and blow dry her own hair, when this was refused she got very angry and slammed out of the salon. about two weeks later she returned had a colour and then said she had forgotten her purse and would be back later; we are still waiting.

We could go to the small claims, but no doubt she will say she wasn't happy with the colour or something, so their doesn't seem much point. Just feel you've been scammed out of £70.

Luckily although forgetting their money isn't that uncommon, (we do a few blondes :ROFLMAO:) not coming back to pay is, so while it leaves a nasty taste it soon gets forgotten. ::bigsmile:

I dont read reviews and would take no notice of them if i did. Someone elses view of a camsite/hairdresser/butcher, is really of no use to me, its how I get treated that is important. I also have very little faith in "customer commendations" believing that most are untrue anyway, but it is a long held fact in advertising, that a customer will spend a lot of energy defending their choice........ sometimes regardless of their true feelings on a service or product.

I visited a campsite recently, the owner was impolite to my wife, then impolite to me, and had little respect for the needs of his customers on site that weekend. My first reaction, epecially when he was rude to my wife, was to stretch him out on the floor, but, I gave it some thought and decided to let Karma take the lead. I could have complained to the C&CC, but that would have tainted my otherwaise excellent experience of their services.
This chap WILL at sometime, get his come uppance, and I am happy that I will not be involved in it, what goes around, comes around:thumb:
