when driving in Europe must you carry original documents or will photo copies be ok,sorry if this sounds ignorant but have never done this before and I am thinking of security.

Have never needed them, but my understanding is that Originals are required-we carry photo-copies on a clipboard in cab and the originals are in as secure a place as we can manage in van.

In France I have to carry car registration document, proof of insurance (and docket on windscreen) and CT (MOT) also passport. French Nationals have ID cards & visitors and French residents are supposed to carry a passport. One of my visitors stepped out in front of a car, Gendarmes turned up along with Samu and the Gendarme asked her for her passport and was quite narked that she didn't have it on her. They didn't take it any further but I don't like to argue with them--wd rather show them all docs and go on my way.

Thanks for all the replies on this.Iwas only thinking that if the bad boys know that original documents are in the m/h thats why they try to steal them.

What Hollyberry has said is correct, we have carry all the same documents at all times

Holly as far as I know if you wanted, you can go to your Mayor and have a French ID card made up for you...we can in northern France, you can also use it like a passport to go to the UK:thumb:

If you don't have one, it's a good idea to get a decent safe fitted in a non-visible location. Make sure it's bolted to something solid like the chassis.

a good idea is to download a copy of all your original documents onto a memory stick

When in France, and for that matter where ever we carry our passports with us. But original documents in the RV safe... Always have documents with me even in the UK... (except registration document) .. driving licence, insurance and MOT ...

Just a thought on this subject, how will we go on now that the MOT is changing and doesn't look anything like an MOT now? I can see some idiots making copies very easily.

Will all the plods in Europe have been trained to recognise our new crap MOT paper?
