I have not been stopped and I know I am just over 3.5 tons. In Europe lots of roads are restricted for my weight but I ignore all of them. Nobody seems to care. Best tip is to have a wee if you think you are going to be weighed... that should do it.

Yes,at Stafford on the M6 northbound once with the Tiffin. Was OK as I was returning from Spain and almost home so both fuel tanks were almost empty and water tank low.Freezer and tinned provisions were also down. That RV had a huge payload as it was all aluminium construction but had I been in the previous Rockwood I would have been over. I pass this weighbridge hundreds of times each year and have personally seen many campers pulled in there in the last 18 months. Prior to that I never saw any. It does seem to be a new thing with VOSA. Having had a discussion with a friend that works for VOSA he said that its since they have become aware of the things people put in motorhome garages ie scooters and cases of beer etc which are well into the rear overhang.

We pulled into a service area down the M5 and parked next to an area cordoned off by VOSA. They were testing caravans at the time.

Don't give the impression that FUN condones overweight MHs just because they probably won't get caught.

hi ,yes stopped at fraddon on the a30.in cornwall. took to the local blkock works just ound the corner all ok , it was in a lowered vw camper a few years ago and i,m sure they thought it was over loaded not common at the time for lowered campers.
also again up near taunton . with the artic , think they really just wanted to see the axle weights . ahain as mini artics arent common i think it was just an exercise for them.
they were suprised it was lighter than they thought . the aluminium chassis makes all the difference.

Whatever gave you that impression. The poll is to try and gain an idea of the chances of being weighed, not caught over-weight, just weighed. I don't doubt it happens I've just never seen it. I just typed this with one hand, the other was touching-wood::bigsmile:

not sure how to answer this one.

Me personally no, but I did actually witness it when a van about 5 in front of me was pulled in to be weighed on the A55 in to Wales a few years back. So it wasn't a mates mates uncles sister's boyfriend aka gassing, but a genuinely witnessed event.

But
They could of just pulled in for a coffee and a chat I suppose

I'd like to be stopped to be honest.

I don't believe I'm anywhere near 3.5t as I don't tend to carry too much, and I'm too tight to pay for a PW, so if I get stopped then it'll be a free check!:roflmto:

Yes, a few years back in a very long swift coachbuilt with saggy rear springs near Ringwood Hampshire. I was followed up the dual carriageway by a traffic car, who pulled me over and asked all the usual questions. Then escorted to the WB on the A338 where they checked the plate and axle limits. I was advjsed to reload more weight to the front and get the suspension inspected. The van had only recently passed its MOT

I also have family in the horsey world and they report large increases in interest from VOSA too. We are all easy targets

B.

I'm puzzled.. why would anyone lose out ?

If they are caught overweight they should be thankful .. not indignant, for in the event of an accident not only would they be uninsured, .. they would also face prosecution. An overweight motorhome is a danger to all road users, not just the occupants, the more checks done the better..

yes aframes are legal. almost every caravan or trailer as oner .so they must be .
more important is carrying lots of spare fuel can be ilegal.
years ago after the fuel shortages i sat on a jury .the chap had 10 offences .
carrying excess fuel in a car .
no adr licence.
no fire extinguishers
using a vehicle with out the correct markings
no bulkhead between the passengers of said vehicle and the fuel.
it just went on . took a week to go through it all. best not carry too much . ten litres i think is all you are supposed to have. unless in hanging tanks .

Never in a motorhome and surprisingly only twice in a truck where I have been put on the weigh bridge even Bigger surprise both times I was empty......though I didn't tell them and they didn't ask :ROFLMAO: I have been stopped in a truck when close the limit if not over but never put on a weigh bridge......must have a onnest face guv.....or just lucky.

My VOSA contacts have been telling me they are getting more interested in motorhomes.....so it may be time to make sure we are not over weight......I do know people with older caravans that have been pulled in by VOSA but these were safety checks not weight.

All the best Rick.

They may just take a tape measure out as well as weigh the motor home... I am sure some of these 40' RVs with trailers are close to the limits if not over. I hear interest has been shown in 5 ver lolling at the hand brakes:Sad:

Thats old news Bob for at least the last 5 or 6 years that i know off, some of us do have proper handbrakes fitted, even my first 5ver a 99 build model had a proper handbrake and so have the two units i have had since, it all depends on who you get the unit from and how they have interpreted the law with regard to what they provide as a 'hand/stationary brake'

With regard to being pulled and weighed, i have seen motorhomes on the M5 pulled but usually the ones with saggy springs.
