Hmm....should have taken a photograph....

Difficulty is describing the bit I need - but here goes....

It's the plastic moulding that is screwed down over the carpet at the habitation entrance on my Compass Avantgarde. It's the width of the door and about 300 mm or so deep, shaped to take a carpet inlay. It's splitting at the front edge, I've done a temporary repair with tape but it won't last.

I tried to glue a piece of plastic behind it without success. I'm a reasonably competent DIY'er but for some reason glue doesn't work for me, I don't think I've ever successfully glued one thing to another since my days of making Airfix kits.

So - done a quick search of companies selling motorhome/caravan self-build parts etc. without success - can anyone help point me in the right direction?

Much obliged,

Mike

Funny enough that happened to our avantgarde 120 when we had it but we didn't try to fix it, we traded it in (not just because of that ) and the dealer saw it but I presumed he would be able to fix it, sorry haven't been much help but probably a design fault, hope someone on here can help

No idea wher you would get one and specialist glues for modern plastics, but why not replace it with a wooden one, easy enough to make if you have a router.

A good thought Wildman, thanks.

I don't have a router but what you suggest may be practicable - a thin sheet of plywood might do the job. If I can't source the proper item I'll look at that as a possibility. It would certainly be a lot more durable.

come down to my birthday bash in april and I'll make you one free of charge.

That's a very kind offer Wildman - Ilfracombe is quite a distance but you never know!

We used to visit Ilfracombe frequently many years ago - Jill's parents retired to there in the 70's.

Pity you're not coming to Eden Camp, Mike. We could have nicked a bit off Bill's (Tick59) 120 and fixed it for you :roflmto::roflmto:

Oh, I couldn't possibly contemplate such a mean and underhanded trick, Graham. And anyway, as you point out, I won't be there.

So - you'll need a medium size Philips screwdriver, and 5 minutes whilst he's not looking. I'll meet you down the pub and give you a fiver for it - OK?

OK, here are a couple of photos of the offending item.

The main rectangular section is 590 x 320, the two "arms" which extend either side of the step are 30 wide and extend approx. 210 (all dimensions in mm)

The green insulating tape is my temporary repair. It is held in place by five screws under the carpet section, and one in each end of the protrudung arms.

I'm planning to start ringing round caravan breakers, any other help or suggestions welcome.

I would be inclined to repair that with a piece of aluminium angle over the top to cover the damaged part.

That's a good thought, and pretty easy too. It has occurred to me that even if I do get a replacement the new one is likely to go the same way as the old. Your solution would cure the problem permanently. Many thanks.

Hi TW you could always repair it with fibreglass body filler and paint all of it which is what I had to do on a similar bit on my step :thumb: If you do big 1 suggestion you will not have to paint :thumb: Angle ali is about a tenner from B&Q

Could you mend the moulding with a GRP repair kit? Something by Davids Isopon or Plastic Padding perhaps. If you can remove the moulding and repair it from behind by laying some glass matting over the split with resin, it should make a strong repair. You might have to fill the outside (good side) of the split with filler, but that is available from the same sources. This kind of thing is available from most car specialists (including Halfords) or ship chandlers.

SNAP!

Thats what you call a bit of a bugger inni. I like the idea of putting down Aluminium angle. That should be relativley easy. The fibre glass idea is a decet idea but you would still be able to see the break in the plastic.
Best of luck.

Just seen the photo. You could try Broken Link Removed at Peterlee, Mike. That's where our Autoquest was taken after being written off. It had a similar step moulding.

I think aluminium angle would be the best looking and most hard wearing options...

Thanks Graham - I phoned Copart but they weren't able to help, they don't break and sell parts, they only sell whole vehicles. I haven't quite given up on finding a replacement, but I think I'm going to go with the aluminium angle solution a few have suggested.
