Bought a new leisure battery (125ah), which was delivered yesterday. It arrived in a cardboard box. I opened the box and the black heavy duty platic bag it was in (also sat on polystyrene pieces). I heaved it out of the box and noticed some dampness around the side of the battery near the bottom. I wondered if it was condensation or battery acid !!!. I managed to sit it on top of the black bag inside the box and would check it in an hour or so. I checked it again and it appeared to be dry, but I then noticed that my trousers had holes in them!!!! which must have happened when I lifted the battery out of the box and touched my legs...

I phoned the company who will exchange the battery, and I asked if the battery should be put outside as I was concerned in case it leaked onto my carpet. I also said that if the box was put outside, I would not be able to guarrantee that someone would not 'steal' it. They said it would be quite safe to keep it in my house .

Do you think I should keep it outside?

Not only do batteries excrete an acid, they also give off a gas, which can be ignited and is very volatile, it would "probably" be safe indoors, but why chance it? There mst be somewhere it can be left, cover it with a box or bin to kep prying eyes away.

[HI]That's fair![/HI]

Dont keep it inside if it's leaking.
As has been said already, flammable gas (hydrogen) is given off by charging / discharging batteries.

Ask the battery company for payment for your ruined trousers.
They can only say no.
Over to Bob.
