Rear Ladders (1 Viewer)

Are rear ladders useful ? OK vague question I know.....

I'd thought that perhaps they could be useful when washing and I even wondered about storing an inflatable boat up there (short journeys to the beach not Euro trips).

Any other functions for them and any tips on different types, also they look pretty much an easy DIY job ?

ladders can be useful for cleaning the roof and fixing a flagpole to, but if it hasnt already got one it will need properly fitting to the inbuilt wooden battons...you cant just screw it to the rear panel.

Never put anything on roof personally, so never needed ladder.

They are simple enough to fix but in my opinion best left to experts as they have to be mounted in the correct places on body and every model can be different, and you can easily get it wrong.

just to add to previous replies...

yes, useful to the scrotes.. gives them access to your roof light .. and easy access to the inside of the van.

if you don't have a compelling reason to use.. I wouldn't fit one.. for cleaning it's just as easy to use step ladders or ladder against the van..

Yep agree the Scrotes used to climb onto ours to take pics on the roof on the way home from pub :Angry:

I've had no scrote issues and my ladder makes servicing the roof and cleaning the Solars an easy affair.

fair comment, you need regular access .. but I would consider fitting an anti climb board..

I made a lockable one for my RV from a piece of aluminium plate..

I agree with most of the replies, but as I have a ladder and have just cleaned the roof I must say it does make it an easy job, but I have a reinforced roof,
If the mh does not have a ladder perhaps it doesn't have a reinforced roof in which case a ladder would be of little use.
Regarding a ladder lock preventing scrotes climbing on the roof, I certainly think it will deter all but the determined and if it isn't easy I think they would go off and find something easier.

Uhm the "scrotes" is a very good point, not thought of that at all and can see what you all say. Had seen the ladder boards and wondered what they were all about so now I know...

I can clean it at the dealers place, he's only 10 mins away and he has some special large carwash bays already equipped with tall step ladders so perhaps that's the way forwards and avoid unwanted roof access.....

our ladder has a removable bottom part

Our Winnebago Aspect has a removable bottom part of the ladder that has a track to hold it in place in a storage locker.. but even with part removed would not stop someone getting on the roof.. why I would not know.. the vent is very small 12' square... it is a power vent.

I use the ladder to fix flag poles to it. and also to fix a washing line to when I have to.

So yes it has a use.

If you've got one it can be useful. If you haven't then they are expensive to retrofit.

I just have a telescopic ladder to access the roof at a tenth of the price.

My van has one and I'm up it all the time:Cool: checking that my solar panel is still there

Last van had a ladder, but don't believe I went up it once.

There isn't one on the current van and I've absolutely no plans to fit one.

They make cleaning road muck off the back of the van a pain too, much easier without (same without a cycle rack too) - no obstructions.

My ladder fit

2004 Autocruise Starspirit Fiamma Ladder project.
The only place it actually will fit is with top brackets hard up against the bottom edge of the top moulding trim and centre line is governed by how the ladder nestles into the top moulding.
This becomes self evident when holding it in place. As you will see from the pictures the very top fixings end up only just inside the overhead locker.The wood is quite substantial at this level which is just as well as only small washers will fit.
The top lower fixings land behind the pelmet and I've used penny washers.
The lower fixings are taken from a bike rack fitting kit and installed complete. All the bolts Top & Bottom are stainless steel coach bolts.
After checking everything fitted dry I've removed and applied Sikaflex 512 to all four brackets. I've then carefully placed a Stainless steel mudguard washer (about 2mm thick) close to the bottom edge of each bracket to ensure that all the adhesive cannot be squeezed out when the bolts are tightened.
Refitted tightened up and excess adhesive cleaned off.
