Recently there have been a number of organizations hacked and by all accounts the data is not even encrypted

So, it got me thinking...

I have a firewall on my router, I have a firewall on my pc, anti virus software, antti malware software etc..

Am I still vulnerable?

It would appear that no computer linked to the outside world is safe and if large organizations cant secure our data should we trust any of them?

I really do not understand any company that allows any sensitive data to be accessed vis the web..

Yes, you're still vulnerable - just as to any criminal behaviour. As someone said "a lock is there to stop an honest man".

As with everything, though, it's a matter of risk and precaution. Hackers are a lot less likely to target individuals than large organisations - especially those large organisations that, in their imaginations, do things wrong.

Having installed similar security precautions - plus lots of backup copies of important files - I'm not unduly worried.

EDIT. IMHO any company that allows any sensitive data to be accessed via the web wants its head examining. Clouds are for looking pretty in the sky and filling reservoirs, not data storage with more holes than a fishing net.

If it's got a password then it can be hacked in most cases. We use encrypted memory sticks for work and as far as I'm aware they can't be hacked and if you get your password wrong too many times all the data is erased.

You would be amazed the amount of people that have Password for their password.

Both of my ebay and amazon selling accounts got hacked by a scammer putting non excistent bargain goods on our shops in the last two weeks, needless to say no one got caught out.

Had two telephone calls at home on both lines saying my computers had virus's etc, just wound them up saying I had a cold!

I have had them call me numerous times! "You have a virus on your computer, you must act quickly"......The first time I told them I would get (imaginary) IT dept upstairs to sort it out, thanked them for alerting me and put the phine down - Didn't work, so next time I adopted the 5 year olds system, which always seems to win arguments eventually!! 'No it doesn't' ...'Yes Sir it does' ...'no it doesn't'.....they haven't called since!:thumb:


As for comp security, using a key scrambler is fairly handy, as it encrypts everything you do such as passwords etc, and takes away the risk of keyloggers that are commonly used - they just log scrammbled garbage instead.

If anyone wants to badly enough they will be able to hack your PC, usually though it isn't worth the effort to hack an individuals PC, when there are many more tempting targets like companies, banks etc. So your [STRIKE]porn[/STRIKE] bank details is probably safe.

You do not hack that sort of site unless you are looking for something to use.. like names and addresses of clients.

I do have encryption on my back up disc and my computer (MacBookPro).. I have nothing of value on it other than just every day use and it would be pain to have it disrupted.
