Swift Kon Tiki Tag, 2007.
Exp
Newbie
Just thinking about making a list of all the things we might need but don`t yet know about.

First van, 07 Swift Kon tiki tag with 9800 miles, hopefully ready for collection next wednesday.
.
Already on/done or included in the deal......

Solar
Habitation Aircon
Extra leisure battery
Cycle rack
EHU lead
Service incl cam belt
Full Valet
12 Months MOT
12 Months tax
Insurance
Joined C&CC

Appreciate we will have a better idea of what we want/need once we start using it, but what would you consider essentials?

Obvious ones we have thought about.....

Kitchen equipment, pots pans, plates cutlery etc.
Bedding
Water carrier of some description.
Hose pipe.
Silver screen.

What else???

Are there any decent websites where you can purchase a lot of this sort of stuff at a reasonable price, or is it best to shop around for everything seperately?

is it worth waiting for one of the big shows maybe?

Any/all ideas suggestions welcome.

Thanks

Steve

Shows are a good place for paying too much for many things.

But wait until you get it. Unless you're setting off around the world on Thursday get a few nights in it and find what you need the practical way. You can do this in your drive, live in it for a few days.

before getting the pans and oven trays etc. measure the oven as many household trays will be too big and don't forget the gas kettle as it will work when you ain't got electric.

obviously weight can be an issue if using pot plates but plastic glasses are a must as when you get to your destination and you open the locker where they have been stored one might jump out at you and being plastic will bounce.:winky:

try not to store heavy items in the high lockers i had the sugar tin above the work top as was the coffee and tea bag tin i now have a hole in the work top where the sugar tin slipped out of my hand.

if you live in it for a weekend on your drive you will soon learn what you need and being on the drive you can always nip into the house.:thumb:

a couple of nice folding chairs to start so you can sit outside if you wish - director type chairs with an attached side table are ideal then you have somewhere to put your cup or glass etc

Err, did I notice 'gas bottle' on your list of 'haves'?

I work on the basis that wherever I go, I will either pass a shop, be near a shop or can drive on to a shop, if the bloke next door hasn't got one we can borrow! - and we actually nearly had to do that when we discovered our smart arty farty posh expensive ruddy corkscrew I'd insisted on treating the van to, got to have a nice new one dear to match whatever .... didn't fit any of the wine bottles we had. Local shop 50 yds away from the Aire had one!

I divided my lists up into must have by law and for safety, comfort etc:
So far have:

2 x warning triangles
Hi-vis vest (left dog's vests in my car--duuhhhh)
First aid kit
Spare bulbs
Snow chains (you never know!)
Fire extinguisher
Fire blanket
extra alarm & burglar deterrent (you can buy pepper spray in France, I assume legally, otherwise use a long reach fly spray)

Folding chairs and tables
Extra pillows and cushions
Clothes dryer that fits on window (might also take folding standing one)
Bedding (decided it is easier to use thin duvet in cover as bottom sheet with another duvet to keep me warm)

Gas kettle
Pots and pans. Total of 4.
Crockery (daughter gave me her Ikea caravan set as they've bought melamine- no way can I live off melamine) 2 oven proof dishes
Cutlery and kitchen bits (garlic crusher, corkscrew etc..)
Glasses --now wondering if I should change for plastic)
Lots of garbage bags.

Cleaning stuff--packs of wipe & go wipes.
Bio liquid for cassette.
Dettol. (also diluted in a spray bottle as my toilet flushes off the main I can swish a little of this to keep the loo smelling fresh)

I've also had to think of animals things--2 folding kennels (best things I've bought so far)
litter trays
leads, harnesses, tether leads for dogs
poo bags
Animal first aid/medicines box
All our passports!

That's it so far.

Thanks, some very useful ideas.

Gas was the subject of another thread, the MH has a large bottle strapped underneath but dealer says they have to decominish it, from what they have described it will be `capped` so can easily be connected again.

They did the same the last time they sold the same vehicle apparently and when it came back again it was all working again.

Space for two bottles also in side locker, need to find out if you can use either/or and switch between them or not.

Thanks again.

Wow I have looked at the list thank goodness the kitchen sink is fitted :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

Truth is we all carry stuff we don't need or never use ours is the cooker but that's fitted so it stays, I always BBQ.

My advice is put in what you know you need and as others have said try out at home, once thats in then see what space and payload you have left, then you can go to town buying all the things that next year you will replace or sell to someone else because you never used them :ROFLMAO: which brings me to the next point, shows yes you can buy and fill a van at a show but more often than not someone will be selling what you want, at the next show we are at I am selling our outside table as our new coach has room for the bigger one I wanted in the first place, many bargains to be had. :thumb:

But above all enjoy whatever you do with your motorhome.

All the best Rick

We carry a short one (about a metre) for when we can get close to the tap and a longer roll-up one (about 6 metres) for further away. We also carry at least one five litre water container - as a last resort, you can always get your feet wet trying to pour the water in to the filler.
