A cheap inverter ? (1 Viewer)

A few electrical threads this week........
Anyone think that a cheapish inverter might be uselful ?

Something that plugs into the dash.......how much and what make ?

I have one that I use to charge my video camera (no 12v lead) it was about £15 from Maplins (75w).

This is about the highest you can run off a lighter socket as they are usually fused at 10A

This is the identical one to my smallest one except mine is 150W. I've had it 9 years and it runs my laptop permanently with the navigation program on my yacht.

It also plugs into the cigar lighter socket.

My 1000W is heavier cabled and needs hardwiring

I use a 150W model that I bought about 7 years ago for (I think) about £30. It gets used for charging up the laptop and camera batteries in an emergency. The Doblo dashboard 12V socket (not the lighter socket) is rated at 180W/15A.

you think you got problems deciding what to buy......my problem is finding out the power output of mine oh:

looks very old, is heavy and possible home made

I use a 300w inverter that cost about £30 years ago. It actually doesn't get used much, and I use it plugged intio the vans 12v wiring which is rated at 90w, I think. It is used for emergency charging of cameras.

There is a better solution for laptops. Most laptops are 19v dc, so an inverter that takes 12v dc, converts it to 240v ac, then plugs into a power supply that converts it back to dc, at 19v, is not very efficient! You can buy power supplies for laptops that work from 12v and just convert to 19v dc, far more efficient.

My laptop only worked intermittently connected through the inverter, because it was near the top of the wiring capability, but through the 12v power supply it works fine.

Hi Popeye,

Would that invertor be ok with a 12 volt plug and plugged into MH 12v habitation electrics ?
I have a 230v only TV and would like to use it when not on hook up or gennie.

you can find a 12volt tv for not much over about £100.00 and that would be more efficient than trying to run a 230 volt tv off your batteries.

some 230v tv's don't like cheap inverters as they play havoc with the power supply really only a pure sine wave inverter is recommended for running electronics and unfortunately they are not cheap.

I have searched for these elusive £100 12v TVs and have yet to find one.
Any clues please for a clueless knokinonabit. :thumb:

there has been recent discussions on here about them some have been had from tesco and other places like currys/comet mainly the ones with the external power supply.
they are not advertised as 12 volt so you have to look but it depends on what size you are after.

Ordered a TV on Saturday night via t'internt and it arrived at 10 o'clock Tuesday morning. It's now in the MH.
