What tyre pressure do you run your motorhome on? Given that in theory the precise optimum pressure should be dictated by the actual axle weights, do any of you go to that trouble? Do you just inflate as per the handbook for ride comfort or optimum wear or do you have another method?

Some examples of weight and inflation would be helpful, thanks

I run at the tyre recommendation of 80 psi, we got over 50,000 miles from tyres before we had to change them.

Motorhome Tyre Pressures? This is getting as bad as the gassing and A-frame threads!

I stuck mine on a weighbridge to get both axle weights, emailed Continental and then adjusted their pressures a little downwards to get my preferred pressures.

My max weights are 1880kg front/ 2000 rear and pressures 62/79psi

My loads actual loads are 1380/1820* (although I've shifted a bit more to the front since)

Continental recommended 45/72

I use 55/70psi and the air rides are set at 3bar.

* No wonder I get stuck on damp grass

I too did the weigh bridge thing and run all mine at 68psi as recommended by the tyre manufacturer for that weight :thumb:

75 on the back and 70 on the front. It feels right when they are at those pressures and there doesn't seem to be any excessive or unequal wear.

I run at the handbook recommended presure for the 1992 Hymer S700.

Front 3.25bar (47psi) - weighbridge load 1540kg - max in handbook 1700kg
Rear 4.5bar (65psi) - weighbridge load 2840kg - max in handbook 3200kg (Twin wheels on back)

I run mine at 65 psi based on the recommendation of the tyre company who I get to inflate my tyres before each journey.
Interested on any thoughts.

Since April 1846 but have always camped.
I run mine as stated in the handbook as 55 in the front and 64 in the back. It is a panel van conversion on a Renault master. Should I be weighing first?
As a matter of interest they are on alloy wheels and lose pressure quite a bit.

I had this on a not very old car recently. Sounds like you're losing the seal around the rim, I was told a build up aluminium oxide inside the wheel is a common problem especially when they're ageing.

My Autotrail Handbook refers you to the Fiat Handbook and then the cab label which specifically refers to the Camper tyres fitted. Pressures are 79.5psi or 5.5 bar all round. Max axles weights are similar for front and rear, 2100 and 2400. Ride is firm but well controlled, probably helped by the Alko chassis.
I never ever use garage pumps on any vehicle, they're so unreliable.
The biggest problem that I've had is achieving the correct pressure and still having it once I've disconnected the compressor
I still carry the compressor supplied, because it has a built-in gunge tank fitted for emergency puncture repairs but, I also have a spare wheel :thumb: But this compressor has a hard to read (accurately) analogue gauge and one of those stupid clip on valve connectors. As a result you lose pressure putting it on and sometimes even more taking it off.
I now use a Michelin 12V Rapid Digital Tyre Inflator with Auto Cut Off which claims to be accurate +/- 1psi up to 50psi, but seems just as good to me at 80psi. The lights and auto cut-off are great but, most of all it has a screw valve connector and you soon master the push/pull technique for minimising pressure loss while fitting. :winky:

interesting thread i have been experimenting with the tyre pressures on our autotrail cherokee on the fiat maxi camper chassis 4250 gvw.

As already stated in previous thread recommended pressure by fiat is 5.5 bar front and rear in my opinion this gives a very hard ride and makes the steering feel very light and skitish on accelleration.

I tried 4.5 bar front and rear good ride but rolled a bit on corners:Eeek: and felt suseptable to cross winds.

Now running at 5 bar front and rear at moment which seems a good compromise and definatley easier on the fillings.

NB this is only an opinion not advice

Ally can also be porous
If cleaning the rims does not work it might pay to either have them clear lacquered on the inside or ( and I hate to say this cos I REALLY hate the stuff ) have some of that anti punture crap put in..

Alternately have them filled with nitrogen
Sounds odd but it has been in common use on bikes and F1 cars for some time
The pure nitrogen molecules are pretty huge compared to normal air.. so tend not to leak quite so readily. ( though a pain in th ebum to be honest as there are still not that many places with a nitrgen scrubber installed )
Slightly more info if you do a search.

Hi Jim,

The Hymer handbook states 5.5 bar on the front, and 4.5 bar on the rear..........for Camping tyres. For commercial tyres, it's 4.5 bar all round, however, I can confirm that these pressures do give a very harsh ride, and one that I am not altogether happy about.

Glynn said:
What pressures would you recommend for a tag axle 4.5 tonner ?.
Please see the above answer to Jim.

At the moment, I have 4.5 bar in the front two, and 4.0 bar in the rear four, and ,all our tyres are commercial, ie, not camping tyres. We are now 5 tonnes.

Regards,

Jock.

not a clue but really should find out....at around £300 per tyre I cant afford to get it wrong.

currently 80psi front and rear twins (think it should be nearer to 100psi).....Goodyear G52 steel belt radial 225/70/19.5

ride feels right and tyres stay cool.

After all the feedback and advice from my thread 9 months ago, I use the Autoquest manual settings for the best ride. Are the motorhome manufacturers going to give you dangerous advice on tyre pressures in today's litigatious society? don't think so.

And i always fill mine with an 80% nitrogen, 20% oxygen mix, seems to work ok :winky:

55psi on the front 65psi rear. Until I found the informative but well hidden label I had the front at 65psi too which gave a very hard ride.

Hi there - where did you find the label on your Rapido - Ive searched high and low

Ford E350 super duty chassis B class Winnebago... Ford say 60 on the twin rears and 65 on the fronts... that is what I haul at.

My Brian James Trailer (4 wheels) also has 60 psi all round.

I use air suspension on the rear and that rides a 60 psi
