A Woosh bang
A bylaw making it illegal to sleep in a vehicle overnight in five North Berwick car parks has been approved by East Lothian Council's cabinet.

At a meeting on Tuesday, the cabinet agreed to ratify the bylaw, which applies to the car parks at Gardiner's Garden in the town centre, Dunbar Road at the Recreation Grounds, and The Haugh Road, Tantallon Terrace and Marine Parade.

The bylaw was suggested by North Berwick Community Council following frequent problems with campervans and caravans spending the night in the car parks. Dealing with the problem was previously a lengthy and ineffective process.

The new bylaw will mean that anyone found in their vehicle in these car parks between 11pm and 6am will be assumed to be using it for overnight camping unless they can prove otherwise. Those violating the bylaw face a fine of up to £500.

in this country you are innocent until proven guilty, so
1) I'm parking not camping,
2) I was fornicating all night and as you never asked for a threesome you cannot prove otherwise.
case dismissed.:thumb::thumb:

From the report it seems that the local community has suffered problems for a long time with both "campervans and caravans" so not surprising that they have taken action.

i blame to 2 big camping clubs for this as it will be them kicking up the biggest stink.
why there cannot be a network of aires across the width and length of the country is beyond comprehension even if they charged a couple of quid per night.

There's nothing in the referenced report about that. Where's the evidence? I've seen plenty of complaints similar to North Berwick in local newspaper throughout the country but never seen either the CC or C&CC quoted as being behind them.

Because, as proved by (lack of) responses to several petitions and lack of action by all but a few people in making positive approaches to councils, very few people actually want aires unless handed them on a plate.

As the report says,
The bylaw was suggested by North Berwick Community Council following [HI]frequent problems with campervans and caravans[/HI] spending the night in the car parks. [HI]Dealing with the problem was previously a lengthy and ineffective process.[/HI]
Surely, therefore, it is not an anti-camper policy but an anti-problem policy. The types of lengthy/ineffective process referred to are also a costly drain on council tax so anything which reduces the cost is good for taxpayers as a whole. There is a world of difference between off-site camping where it causes no problems and camping in places such as the car parks concerned where problems are long standing.
