Ps
We have parked for free down the mosel but the free places are few and far between.in fact we stayed at one big layby,/ stellpatz along with, dabhand hand, flatpackchicken ,and JockandRita and another funster who I can't remember, sorry.
Town/ village across the road and lots of trees with hazelnuts.
Good grief Jim, your memory is better than mine and Rita's, as we can't remember. Could the other Funsters have been garjanco Gary & Janet by any chance?

I would avoid the campsite on the river next to the two bridges at Schweich unless you are a very heavy sleeper or have very good earplugs as the lorry traffic thunders across the bridges all night.
Ah yes Paul. That's the one we christened the "Stalag", after our first visit there. We stayed 1 x night, and not been back since.................thankfully. :(
Some inconsiderate barsteward had a brazier going on his pitch, too close for my liking to others. Although far enough away for us not to be at risk, the smoke levels were horrendous and couldn't be avoided.

You are slipping Alex, we have found a few free ones.
We found a freebie at the rear of a Bier Keller in Piesporter. Obviously I indulged, however, my request in a Scottish accent for a Weissbier, resulted in me receiving a Pilsner.
There was a nice Stellplatz further through the village, right on the riverbank, but it was rammed. :(

Cheers,

Jock. :)

We spent a few nights at Sierck-les-Bains just over the French border. Enjoyed the castle and a nice little walk up the crag on the other side of the river to Luxembourg and back down the east bank via Germany (perhaps via a bar in Luxembourg). It was the first time the kids had walked over an international border. Had to stay in the municipal campsite, as we had pup tents, but we passed what appeared to be an aire right in the middle of town. The campsite was reasonably priced, though, and right on the river. The Luxembourgish towns along this border have to be seen to be believed. We once counted 9 petrol stations in the space of 500m, all big ones and we probably missed a few. The few spaces between them were filled with booze and fag joints. The population of that town is 2,186 according to Wikipedia.

Thankyou for all the replies , good to see some places being recommended more than once. I can see me spending time today with getting an old fashioned atlas and pen and paper out 👍
You are asking the wrong person Sandra. We hardly ever pay ever pay and prefer woods or picnic areas.
I would guess overlooking the Mosel 14-20E but there are loads
You are very qualified for me to be asking you. With me being a typical Scot 😂 we love free spots. Any free co ordinates post them up or pm me if you prefer please.
but I am a Pailmerk so I'm bias
I’ve no idea what that is

Sandra, this recommendation is on the Mosel but a few miles away on the Saar, the town of Saarburg is lovely and has a Stelplatz within walking distance. You can easily visit Konz or Trier by bike or train, we jumped on the train to Trier which cost about 6 euro return.

You're right! Diesel £1.53 when we filled up. The petrol stations are also full of booze and fags as well!

I can understand why the Mosel is popular
Have been a couple of times and will be back at some point.
No shortage of other nice places though.
I'm sure you will find somewhere else if you really want to avoid the other Funsters
Only area we have been that didn’t particularly click was in the Black Forest. Not sure why probably just stopped in the wrong places and weather was a bit iffy.

Love Mosel. Been several times.
We are off to Ireland for 10 days from 23rd.
Don't think there will be too many Funsters there to bump into  (y)

We cycled down the Mosel a few years back.
The place to start is Saarburg (which is not technically on the Mosel)
Fill up in Luxemburg as you pass.
Trier takes at least a full day if not two to see around, particularly if you have an interest in Roman history.
The best way to see the area is by bike. as the distances are only a few miles between villages, it could take you a week

I have been to the wine festival on the Mosel quite a few times. The campsite in Bernkastel is on an island and gets a bit rowdy after a few days of wine and bratwurst. Well worth a visit though.
Isn't bernkastel now closed?

We stayed at this one last November, very friendly and helpful people running it and a steady walk into a lovely little town..

How cold was it then please?

It was the start of November,It was a coat at night but jumper during the day.
We were at Titisee the week before and in t-shirts so there is still the chance of a warm day.
