Posted this request on another thread (vets in France) and thanks for the update on DEFRA. However as we have a 13 week old puppy and wish to depart these frozen shores in January, and as yet we haven't got pet insurance and wonder if you good people can recommend a good one esp for continental travel Many thanks

We are with Tesco which is ok but if you need to claim you have to ring up for a form which causes delay so it's a bit of a pain. Have used Petplan in the past and they are excellent. Not sure who you get the best deal from these days so you probably need to shop around a bit. Just make sure the policy covers you for travel abroad - standard policies don't always include this. We had to pay extra with Tesco, so make sure you ask the question when you're getting quotes. Thankfully not had to make a claim abroad - you never know how good it is until you have to test it!! Make sure you take claim forms with you just in case (hopefully you won't need them).

We used M&S and they were brilliant - no quibble, easy to deal with and very friendly. They were the cheapest by far at the time.

As for the claim forms, you can go on the M&S site, download the form and then print a load off and take them with you so you have them if you need them.

Just make sure they cover you for travelling abroad though - I'd be very surprised if they didn't.

Hope this helps

We gave up pet insurance many years ago now, instead we put aside the premium amount and invest and use only for amounts that would be covered by insurance.

We started when we took on an elder dog many years ago that we could not get cover for him so cancelled for other dog and cat and started then.

We have managed so far without problems including about £7500 bill from Royal Vet College for one of our latest dogs.

We still have money left in their account.

Just to show that it can be done without giving someone else a profit.

This not so much pet insurance, but thought dog had to be 6 months to get a passport, we have just taken on a little rescue year old and were told this by vet at pets at home
