Alex and I have tugged since the 70's and m/homed more recently.
Hi Guys and Gals,
We just recently stopped tugging and have joined the motyhome fraternity. We briefly had a tiny campervan, a few years ago, and spent 6 weeks around France using mostly aires and the odd few days on campsites.
Having enjoyed ourselves immensely back then, at last we’ve got a motyvan, and want to do something similar for about 8/10 weeks, starting mid January. Travelling down through France, then into Spain. The thinking is that it’s got to be a bit warmer down there than Scotland!
It seems that many people go down and stay in one place but we'd like to be a bit more free and easy.
Do any of you clever folks know if we are likely to be able to find campsites available to use without pre-booking?:help:

There no doubt will be some but it could be debatable, depends how many germans, french and dutch not to mention uk vans are down there for the winter sun, its not only us lot that go for the winter, and they do tend to book their sites for the long term as the rate is a lot better.

Thanks for that. I guess it'll be better to have a booked ahead break.

Although we do stay long term in Zahora when we are travelling down and back we have NEVER booked a site!
Always find a pitch quite easily.:thumb:
Unless you want to spend time on a particular site I wouldn't worry!

Hope not as we aren't, like you we like to be free and easy. We are catching the Portsmouth to Santander ferry on 4th December, we have loose plans on where we are going, but won't be staying anywhere too long, we have wheels on our motorhome and they like to roll. We are going to try the Chicken Run (campsite) in Portugal - some other funsters are going there too. We will also visit Zahora, where quite a few funsters longstay there. We might be going over to Morocco for a few weeks, all depends on the political status at the time we decide. If we don't go there, we will be travelling around Portugal and Spain until the weather warms up a bit, then we will meander back through France to catch our ferry on 25th April back to the UK.

Hi Alex and Anne , we go for 3 and 1/2 months over winter and always do the short crossing long drive.
France in January is very cold and a good chance of snow, two years ago we had snow all the way through France.
The van we have now is fully winterised and we take a week or more going and the same coming home, our last van was not and it was a 3 day trip into Spain. :roflmto:
Most of the Aires in France have the water turned Off, but you can stay no problem, some have electric On, water is available at the stopping places on the bigger roads with toilets, but we don't park over night at those, only the village Aires.

There are some campsites Open in France but not many.
Here:
http://www.eutouring.com/french_campsites_open_all_year/campsites_open_all_year.html

This is the first year we have booked sites, we have only been to one or two in the past and not been able to get on, they have lots of sites Open in Spain and if you are not going to stay long periods get the ACSI Card it works out cheaper and give you a list of sites to visit.

If moving around from place to place absolutely no need to book ahead, unless you have a favourite site you want to visit....otherwise just turn up. Suggest you arm yourself with a couple of camp site books and subscribe to ACSI 2012 if you have time as the discount will pay for the price in no time at all.
Good Luck.

Hi

We've spent the last 2 years in Spain & unless you get as far south as Bonterra Park in Benicassim, near Castellon, you may well be cold & wet.

If you want the sun experience has taught us to get as far south & east as possible. Many inland sites in Spain close for the winter & the weather can be rough.

We have friends arriving in December, and they are catching the Santander ferry to avoid the French weather. They will then run for Benicassim, Alicante, Mazzeron & then Marbella. We generally start heading north in late March, early April.

Get the ACSI card & DVD. Well worth it.

Hope this helps.

Hi
If you get down near Bennicassim, Bonterra park is a good site and they take ACSI, so good price early doors. Pete :thumb::thumb:

I don't think you will have a problem, we have yet to find a site that is completely full and been wintering down south for years.
Don't forget Spain and Portugal now have aires, not as many as France but we have used quite a few with success.
The Barragems (Reservoirs) of Portugal should not be missed, usually in beautiful rural locations but many without any services.

Travel to Spain/France/Campsites

I can only just repeat what the other guys have said, you definately need the ACSI card book and maps, dont go without it, available from vacarious books order it now for 2012, great for short stays, 15 euros max for 1 night. We explored the coast line from north of Valencia down to Benidorm onto Guardamar. One particular site (you will see it in the book) is just a short bike ride away from Valencia, going south, a large inland lake runs down the coast in that area, well worth exploring.
I must admit I personally do enjoy the drive down through to France, although the weather is something to be desired, as bad as uk, if not worse. I agree the village aires are the best, although even these are getting rather greedy in places, when it comes to stopping overnight, as is everywhere else and yes the water can be turned off and no electric.
Water, could always be found at thel larger aires on the motorways , one year I will have to tour France during the summer, to appreciate it, hope you find this usefull. Ronboyracer:ROFLMAO:

ACSI price increase

ACSI prices for 2012 season are now 12/14/16 euros per night, this includes 4kw of EHU per day and you MAY be charged for additional electric above this level....still a bargain, and IMO a must buy.
