Have just spent a leisurely half hour or so trawling through this section and have read many of the threads, old and new with interest. I do note that many of the threads are asking for recommendations/comments about camp sites, particularly here in Spain which prompts me to ask...... why so few Camp Site Reviews on this forum ?
Having been running for some years now and with a (paying) subscriber list in the order of 1000 (circa) I am astonished to see that in all categories within the Review section, UK/Europe/Rest of World there are only 67 original review entries by members/subscribers !! A number of these reviews have been "reviewed" by member users but they do not count as entries to the database.
For my part, as a relative newcomer to the world of MH'ing, such reviews are a vital part of my trip planning as details in publications/guides etc are of course biased. The best information for site quality/facilities and costs are those made by satisfied or dissatisfied users, and I always make a point of passing on such information for others to share.
So, come on members, share your experiences of camp sites/aires /wild camping locations with the rest of the membership.

Regards, Bryan

Hi Bryan, the campsite database in an area that I need to develop. I'm sure if it was designed better then it would be used more. There are some excellent campsite database websites and I feel that my best efforts will look pale in comparison. So I would need to pay someone to develop one for me at a starting cost of around $1500/$2500

I have started myself with the Frenchaires, which I'm sure you've seen but that site style is not robust enough to handle all the sites in the UK as we'll as reviews of same. This is why I have tended to 'specialise" which keeps the databases small, i.e. Funsters Favourite Aires and a new Funsters Favourite CL's site which is in development.

I do appreciate your frustration and it would be great to have a fully fledged site listing and review section, but it will be a while yet.

Thanks Jim,
I found the way it was done on RVOC was good it made it very easy to find a site close to were you wanted to be, can that format be used until the all sing and all dancing system is set up. :thumb::thumb:

Thanks Jim. Most of your reply went straight over my head. Are you saying the review data base is full ? Not functioning ? or Just not fit for purpose ? I entered a review recently and except for failing to upload my pictures it accepted my data.
I does not help to say that there are "excellent campsite database websites", meaning I presume , elsewhere. It is surely desirable that you keep your members and subscribers here rather than direct them to other sites, and if a cost is involved then perhaps it must be borne in the best interests of the site.
I do understand the need for steady growth and development but I repeat that an important part of forums such as these is to impart and exchange information relevant to members needs. Camp site referral is certainly one of those needs.

Regards, Bryan

Jim's reply was pretty clear to me, this is a non-profit making forum and, as Jim says, to set up a database costs money and he already devotes considerable time to maintaining Motorhome Fun. In the meantime other places are available for campsite reviews, it won't stop me and most other Funsters I suspect from remaining faithful to MHF.

As a by the by, is not the goodness ( or otherwise ) in the ye of the beholder ?

Look at the never ending debate about whether to join C & CC, C C or MC.

My experience would dictate that no one EVER joins the C C.. But that is based on my one experience of them.

Lots of other folk have nothing but praise for them..

The same must surely go for camp sites.. My all time favorite is Green Farm at Scratby, Norfolk.. My worst experiences are all on Parkes places.. Other people would have diametrically opposite feelings if their stay on the sites in question had been different to my own..

What I am trying to say ( not very clearly I admit ! ) is that reviews are not really that useful unless you happen to know the person and circumstance of the review

What is FAR more useful is a list of what sites are where as Jim has done with the aires .

Lets face it, if you visit a site and it is pants, you are hardly likely to suggest it be added to a site list, so it becomes self evaluating ( sort of thing )

I'm far more interested in where sites are as opposed to someone else's opinion of the site.

I don't think we can....I was under the impression the reviews section was still under construction, and I do not seem to be able to access it.

I've always used a certain well-known site that reviews campsites in the UK, and submitted several reviews of my own, and it's been pretty useful. I wouldn't want to stop contributing to that in favour of, say MHF, but I'm not sure cut-and-paste would go down too well and might infringe some kind of copywrite/content rule.

Campsite reviews

We can help with French naturist campsites which are really nice and tend to have better facilities than "textile" ones. We've been to about 30 and there are loads more.

All the more reason to put it on a database.....if it is pants, then let your friends/colleagues/members know it, that they might avoid it, because no publication is likely to tell you it is "pants"

Don't know about it being under construction, but I was able to access it, (went to RESOURCES on side bar, clicked it and there it was) and upload a recent site visit...except for photos.

I take all reviews with a pinch of salt. What suits one will not suit another and most subscribers tend to have an axe to grind. I doubt there's such a thing as an objective review.
